Job Summary:

The Food Preparation Specialist is responsible for preparing and cooking meals for palliative care patients residing at Sakura House. This role requires the ability to work independently and as part of a team to ensure high-quality food service.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare meals in accordance with approved menus, nutritional guidelines, and regulations.
  • Maintain the quality of food served, quantity prepared, and sanitation of the food preparation area.
  • Familiarize yourself with the specific needs of clients, including diet restrictions, allergies, and special requests.
  • Ensure the ordering of required ingredients and supplies.
  • Assist with the process for checking and receiving deliveries and inventory control.
  • Ensure all supplies are stored, labeled, and rotated properly.
  • Maintain a clean, neat, and safe working environment.
  • Follow established waste management guidelines for organics, paper, plastics, cans/bottles, and non-recyclable materials.
  • Report areas and equipment in need of repair to the maintenance department.
  • Ensure the kitchen appearance meets established standards for cleanliness and organization.
  • Observe problems, concerns, and issues with food service and communicate them appropriately.
  • Adhere to all established policies and procedures.

External and Internal Relationships:

  • Work closely with clients, staff members, volunteers, and vendors.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of high school diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of one year of experience in food preparation in the hospitality or healthcare industry.
  • Previous experience working in a palliative care environment is an asset.
  • Food Handler's Certificate preferred.
  • Food Service Worker certificate preferred.
  • Ability to read, prepare, and plan menus.
  • Ability to prepare meals within time deadlines.
  • Knowledge of proper food handling, cooking to specific nutritional guidelines, temperature control, good hygiene, and quality control.

Skill Requirements:

  • Capable of lifting moderate weight and carrying it short distances.
  • Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Effective organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Client service-oriented, with the ability to effectively work with patients, staff, and volunteers.

Other:

  • Some traveling required.
  • Ability to speak French is an asset in French Designated areas.
  • Current and original copy of a satisfactory Criminal Records Check required.
  • A Vulnerable Sector Search and/or Child Abuse Registry Check required.
  • The use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) may be required.

  • Bend, push, pull, grip, reach, kneel, crouch using good body mechanics.
