Position Overview:
The City of Toronto is seeking a skilled Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Specialist to join our dedicated team. This role involves performing a variety of maintenance and inspection tasks related to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conducts both skilled and semi-skilled maintenance and inspection tasks in the installation, upkeep, enhancement, testing, and repair of heating, ventilation, pool mechanical systems, refrigeration, and air conditioning systems, along with all associated equipment.
- Prepares layouts and reviews schematics and project designs to facilitate new installations.
- Ensures systems operate as intended, selecting appropriate refrigerants, oils, and lubricants for refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Cleans systems and performs necessary tests.
- Conducts inspections, testing, and maintenance work, overhauling pumps, compressors, fans, heat exchangers, and related equipment; initiates and terminates refrigeration and air conditioning systems to confirm all safety controls are functional and in optimal condition.
- Procures materials and equipment for installation projects, liaising directly with suppliers and manufacturers for parts ordering and purchasing.
- Engages in continuous education to stay informed about health and safety regulations, gas codes, TSSA, and advancements in the heating and air conditioning sector.
- Provides guidance and training to other team members, effectively communicating related activities both verbally and in writing, including report preparation, work details, data logging, and documentation.
- Utilizes electric arc and oxy-acetylene welding and cutting tools, including brazing and soldering techniques.
- Performs various skilled tasks that do not necessitate the involvement of other licensed trades.
- Employs a range of tools and equipment, maintaining responsibility for their upkeep.
- Travels to different work sites as required.
- Works at heights when necessary.
- Completes other related tasks as assigned.
Essential Qualifications:
- Must hold and maintain a valid Certificate of Qualification as a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic in accordance with provincial regulations.
- Must possess an Ozone Depletion Prevention Card.
- Demonstrated experience in purging and charging refrigeration systems with refrigerants, conducting leak detection tests, and managing the start-up and shut-down of refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
- Proficient in the use, calibration, and testing of instruments, gauges, and electro-mechanical and pneumatic controls used in HVAC systems.
- Experience with electric arc and oxy-acetylene cutting and welding, brazing, and soldering.
- Knowledge of materials, components, and joining methods suitable for the installation and repair of piping in refrigeration systems.
- Familiarity with workshop and plumbing practices, as well as the operation of machine tools and instruments used in electromechanical work.
- Expertise in selecting refrigerants, oils, and lubricants appropriate for refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience in maintaining machinery and equipment, including air compressors, pumps, fans, heat exchangers, valves, and gauges, utilizing preventive and predictive maintenance methods for reliable and economical operation.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Class "G" Driver's License and meet the City's equipment operating permits and requirements.
- Must also hold a G1 Gas Fitter certification.
Additional Skills:
- Thorough understanding of heating, ventilation, refrigeration, and air conditioning principles, with extensive experience in controlling and automating multiple HVAC systems.
- Knowledge of electricity in both single and three-phase forms as applied to motors, solenoid valves, etc.
- Experience in safely connecting and disconnecting electric power lines to equipment following lock-out procedures.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical, mechanical, and instrumentation drawings, as well as produce sketches and working drawings.
- Extensive experience in setting up and aligning equipment according to specifications and drawings.
