Role Summary

The Pathologist's Assistant plays a critical role within the Laboratory Medicine Program, which is recognized as a leader in diagnostic services. This position involves collaboration with both the Surgical Pathology and Autopsy Pathology divisions, where the assistant will support pathologists in delivering high-quality diagnostic services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Accurately describes and documents findings of specimens during gross examination procedures.
  • Captures photographic documentation of specimens.
  • Applies knowledge of medical-legal standards and protocols for specimen management, autopsy procedures, and patient confidentiality.
  • Engages in quality assurance initiatives and adheres to safety practices to maintain a secure working environment.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science (BSc) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) with advanced coursework in anatomy and physiology.
  • Proven experience in gross examination of surgical pathology specimens.
  • Graduation from a NAACLS-accredited Pathologist Assistant training program is preferred.
  • Current certification from CCCPA and/or ASCP or eligibility to obtain certification is required.
  • Comprehensive understanding of anatomy and physiology, particularly regarding disease presentation.
  • Exceptional observational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team, including medical professionals and laboratory staff.
  • Familiarity with standard safety protocols and laboratory hygiene practices.
  • Knowledge of safe handling and storage of chemicals, along with emergency response procedures.
  • Proficiency in the safe operation of hand and power tools used in laboratory settings.
  • Experience in digital photography for specimen documentation.
  • Competence in tissue sampling for frozen section analysis.
  • Computer proficiency in Windows-based applications.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, along with problem identification and resolution capabilities.
  • Good interpersonal and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Capacity to function effectively as part of a team.
