Job Summary

The Calgary Stampede is seeking a seasoned professional to fill the role of Manager, Indigenous Engagement and Partnerships. This position is critical in driving the organization's Indigenous programming, fostering engagement, promoting inclusion, and advancing reconciliation strategies and activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Stewardship of Elbow River Camp: Steward the 112-year relationship with Tipi Holders, oversee the operations of Elbow River Camp.
  • Lead Indigenous Engagement: Creates, refines, and shares best practices for consultation and engagement. Provides expert guidance on organization-wide Indigenous engagement efforts, including training, diversity, equity, and inclusion awareness and education, recruitment, opportunity creation, sponsor engagement, and the development of new Indigenous programming opportunities across various departments and volunteer committees.
  • Lead Indigenous Programming: Lead and support teams to develop and deliver Stampede-time and year-round Indigenous programming, including the annual Elbow River Camp and other key events such as the Grandstand, Rodeo, Parade, First Nations Princess program, Caravan, Downtown Attractions, and special programming, along with year-round educational and outreach initiatives.
  • Cultivate Relationships: Build and nurture positive relationships with Indigenous communities. Foster supportive environments that respect and honour Indigenous traditions and values, and lead organizational education to embed a culture of belonging.
  • Team Leadership: Lead a team dedicated to Indigenous programming ensuring alignment with the divisional strategic plan, recruiting, mentoring, and developing exceptional talent.
  • Strategic Oversight: In partnership with the Executive Vice President, Foundation, Cultures and Heritage, provide daily oversight of Calgary Stampede operations and Indigenous strategies, including policy review and updates, strategic planning and execution, leadership development, change management, performance management, product development, and budget creation and maintenance.
Qualifications
  • A minimum of a University Degree in a related field or traditional equivalent
  • At least 5 years of experience in organizations and roles developing and maintaining relationships with Indigenous communities.
  • Proven senior leadership skills with a track record of building respectful and lasting partnerships with internal and external partners.
  • Ability to create, present, implement, and evaluate a business plan.
  • Experience in overseeing and executing large-scale, complex events.
  • Demonstrated success in team leadership, liaising with volunteers, and employee management, with high levels of intercultural competency.
  • Expertise in planning and executing programs that support organization-wide inclusion and engagement.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a talent for relationship building and facilitation.
  • Understanding of the historic and current societal landscape related to Indigenous peoples
  • Ability to consult and engage with Indigenous partners to understand and share perspectives on organizational issues
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to navigate complex issues and develop sound solutions and strategies.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications.
