We are seeking an experienced Indigenous Policy Strategist to help advance our Planning and Development Services department's contribution to Truth & Reconciliation actions, The City of Calgary's Indigenous Policy, and White Goose Flying report.

The successful candidate will act as a relationship management liaison between PDS staff and Indigenous communities, providing project/program management support for PDS's Indigenous program activities. They will also serve as an Indigenous subject matter expert and advisor, providing guidance on culturally appropriate engagement activities and policy research and development.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting research, investigations, data collection, and analysis to support the Indigenous program in the PDS department.
  • Developing and coordinating relationships and guiding culturally appropriate engagement activities between PDS staff and Indigenous rightsholders.
  • Providing project management support to PDS's Indigenous program, including scheduling, meetings, and events, managing and coordinating schedules, taking meeting minutes, maintaining records, and documenting risks.
  • Providing Indigenous subject matter expertise to PDS staff and leadership in relation to policy research and development, analysis, briefings, reports, and engagement opportunities.

Qualifications include:

  • A master's degree in Indigenous Studies and at least 1 year of relevant work experience, or a master's degree in a related field and at least 3 years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience in building and maintaining relationships and collaboration with Indigenous communities, both rural and urban, and Traditional Knowledge Keepers.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous history, culture, ceremony, and languages relevant to the Treaty 7 region.
  • Experience and/or knowledge in city, community, regional, or transportation planning policy and processes, land development and approvals, climate change adaptation and mitigation, municipal infrastructure, environmental management, and sustainability will be an asset.

The ideal candidate will possess tact and diplomacy, political acumen, relationship management skills, and strong communication skills. They will work in a mainly office environment with external meetings and public engagement sessions.
