Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada University of British Columbia Full time $8,305 - $12,952
Position Title:
Business Intelligence Data Analyst

Department:
Business Intelligence I | Project Management Office | VP Finance and Operations

At the University of British Columbia, we recognize that fostering a diverse workforce is essential for achieving excellence in research, innovation, and education for all faculty, staff, and students.

Our dedication to employment equity promotes inclusion and fairness, enriching UBC's workplace with diverse perspectives and creating an environment conducive to a fulfilling career.

The Business Intelligence Data Analyst collaborates closely with the Senior Data & Business Analyst to spearhead UBC's finance data and reporting strategy. This role involves the development and execution of various strategic data initiatives and projects for the institution.

Key responsibilities include managing data integration, ensuring data security, and maintaining the integrity of metadata and curated data.

Furthermore, the Business Intelligence Data Analyst is tasked with recommending effective methods for data capture and enhancing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), reports, and Power BI dashboards.

Support is provided through a help desk, executing data analysis, crafting documentation, conducting system testing, and leading training sessions.

By working closely with essential business leaders across UBC, the Business Intelligence Data Analyst plays a crucial role in empowering the VP Finance and Operations and UBC to make informed strategic, financial, and operational decisions.

This position is vital in promoting financial transparency, enhancing accountability, and driving service transformation in alignment with UBC's core mission.

The Business Intelligence Data Analyst will engage with technology and finance professionals, as well as faculty, staff, and students across UBC, to cultivate a culture of data-driven decision-making, helping departments and teams improve data literacy, facilitate data exploration, and encourage the use of business intelligence tools and processes among end-users.

Reporting to the Business Intelligence Manager, this role is essential in managing the administration of business intelligence solutions.

Collaboration with project teams may be required, potentially necessitating indirect reporting to a Project Manager. The Business Intelligence Data Analyst will work alongside Senior Data & Business Intelligence Analysts, data developers, engineers, business analysts, and finance professionals to ensure the effective delivery of business intelligence solutions.

This role involves interaction with various levels of university staff, from Senior Academic Officers to Department Heads, requiring a high degree of professionalism and discretion.

Responsibilities include leading university-wide projects related to finance BI reporting.

Design, develop, and oversee BI reports and dashboards within BI applications and Power BI to convert data into actionable insights for university stakeholders.

Write, maintain, and support SQL queries and ETL scripts to execute data loading processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness across different IT applications.

Analyze the impacts of data model changes and resolve any technical issues that may arise, affecting the business intelligence application, including SQL tables, data models, reports, and dashboards.

Develop and manage methodologies, standards, procedures, processes, and policies related to the enhancement and maintenance of BI reporting quality.

Provide strategic security and access administration oversight, expertise, and support for enterprise-wide Business Intelligence applications; design, develop, and implement enhancements to existing BI applications and reports to support seamless integration across various application systems.

Manage the help desk by providing technical expertise, training, and consultation to other UBC staff.

Resolve complex Tier 2 & 3 Service Centre tickets through various communication methods and engage product vendors for technical support when necessary.

Provide technical subject matter expertise and advice throughout every phase of the data integration and reporting life cycle to support ongoing updates and evolution of the business intelligence application.

Develop comprehensive, up-to-date technical documentation for BI systems and processes for internal knowledge inventory and overall customer service material development.

Design and conduct BI application and process integration testing to ensure functionality and performance standards.

Design and deliver training programs for BI tools and data analysis techniques to UBC staff.

Lead the design, development, testing, and tracking of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for the VP Finance and Operations departments and UBC-wide finance initiatives.

Maintain the implementation plan for Benefits Realization Management (BRM), collaborating with process owners to define functional and business requirements and performance requirements to ensure UBC maximizes the benefits of its systems.

Lead the data and information collection processes for the UniForum program, ensuring data accuracy and continuous improvement of the data collection process.

Act as the interdepartmental interface for the UniForum project team and other units on campus.

Partner with UBC IT to support the definition of business needs, processes, and interdependencies that guide BI report administration.

Maintain appropriate professional designations and up-to-date knowledge of current information technology techniques and tools.

This position supports the reliability and high availability of UBC's mission-critical systems, including Business Intelligence application monitoring, tier 2 support, problem analysis, and resolution, ensuring services meet or exceed customer service levels.

Errors or neglect in regular ETL and integrity checks by the Business Intelligence Data Analyst could lead to misinformed decisions by university executives and leadership, potentially impacting institutional standards and operations.

Inaccurate data handling or analysis can result in critical errors, affecting the university's decision-making process and potentially leading to loss of productivity, funding, and revenue.

The Business Intelligence Data Analyst is expected to work with a significant degree of independence, exercising discretion in methods and procedures while performing their role.

Work quality is assessed against the achievement of broad objectives. While the role is autonomous, the Business Intelligence Data Analyst is also a collaborative team member, reporting to and receiving general direction from the Business Intelligence Manager.

Feedback may also be incorporated from VP Finance and Operations Directors and senior management. Participation in peer reviews and contributing feedback on team performance to the Business Intelligence Manager is also expected.

A bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline is preferred, along with in-depth knowledge of applications and the business requirements supporting them. A commitment to enhancing awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion is essential.

Understanding of data modeling, data warehouse design, and relational databases, with familiarity in Entity-relationship diagrams and ETL processes, is required. Experience with data loading, security, and ensuring data integrity is necessary. Proficiency in BI and reporting tools, particularly Power BI and OLAP technologies, is expected.

Effective communication skills are crucial, with the ability to explain technical concepts to a non-technical audience. Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, including advanced Excel skills, is important. A commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion is essential.
