Position Overview

Canada Life Assurance Company is seeking a skilled Litigation Counsel to enhance our legal team, operating across various locations. This role is perfect for a seasoned junior litigator eager to work with a leading employer in Canada.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Actively participate in the Canadian Legal group, leveraging your expertise and collaborative spirit to provide effective solutions to our business challenges.
  • Work closely with the Trial and Fraud team within the Legal group.
  • Deliver legal opinions, guidance, and representation to diverse business units and corporate counsel on matters impacting the organization, particularly those involving fraud.
  • Prepare legal documents including pleadings, briefs, and settlement agreements; conduct discoveries, mediations, and settlement discussions.
  • Represent the company in court, handling motions, applications, pre-trial meetings, trials, and appeals.
  • Perform legal research and analysis as necessary.
  • Oversee and coordinate with external legal counsel engaged in litigation.
  • Assist various business units with legislative and regulatory matters, advising on litigation and fraud risk.
  • Support senior legal team members on specific legal issues and broader initiatives.
Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor degree and membership in the Law Society of Ontario (or commitment to obtain membership) and in another provincial bar is a plus.
  • 3-5 years of relevant civil litigation experience, either in a law firm or in-house.
  • Familiarity with fraud litigation and complex legal matters.
  • Understanding of insurance products and the financial services sector is advantageous.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, capable of clearly presenting issues to stakeholders and senior management.
  • Strong drafting abilities and a practical, solution-oriented mindset.
  • Sound judgment with the capacity to identify critical issues and offer independent insights to management.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of court procedures and regulatory frameworks.
  • Demonstrated interest in developing expertise in various legal domains.
  • Self-driven, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Excellent negotiation skills.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills, capable of managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Proficient in utilizing virtual litigation tools and relevant technology.
