Position Overview
As a pivotal member of the Canadian Litigation team, you will report directly to the Assistant Vice-President & Senior Counsel, Litigation. Your role will involve providing essential legal guidance and representation to our Canadian business sectors, focusing primarily on life, health, and disability litigation, particularly in relation to fraud cases. This position offers a unique opportunity to deepen your expertise in evolving areas of practice, such as fraud recovery and defense.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as a senior contributor within the Canadian Legal team, utilizing your experience and collaborative approach to deliver effective legal solutions.
- Offer legal opinions, advice, and representation to various business units and corporate counsel on matters impacting the organization, especially concerning fraud.
- Prepare legal documents including pleadings, briefs, and settlement agreements, and engage in discovery, mediation, and settlement discussions.
- Represent the company in court, handling motions, applications, trials, and appeals.
- Oversee and manage external legal counsel involved in litigation processes.
- Assist diverse business units with legislative and regulatory issues, providing insights on litigation and fraud risk.
- Coordinate and contribute to strategic initiatives that enhance the litigation function and support business operations.
- Support the Assistant Vice-President & Senior Counsel, Litigation with various legal matters and team development initiatives.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor degree and membership in the Law Society of Ontario (required); membership in another provincial bar is advantageous.
- A minimum of 7 years of relevant civil litigation experience, either in a law firm or in-house setting.
- Expertise in fraud litigation and/or complex litigation cases.
- Familiarity with insurance products and the financial services sector is a plus.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly present complex issues to stakeholders and senior management.
- Strong drafting and legal skills, with a focus on practical, solution-oriented communication.
- Sound judgment and the ability to identify critical issues while providing independent insights to management.
- Comprehensive understanding of court procedures and the regulatory landscape.
- Demonstrated commitment to developing expertise in various legal areas, including fraud, and mentoring team members.
- Self-driven with the capability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Outstanding negotiation skills.
- Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and time management abilities, capable of managing multiple projects.
- Proven analytical and problem-solving skills, adept at simplifying complex issues.
- Experience with virtual litigation tools and relevant technology.
Please note that this role may involve travel.
