Organic Chemistry Lab Instructor

Durham College is seeking a dedicated and experienced professional to contribute to our commitment to quality education and student success.

The School of Science, Engineering and Information Technology requires a part-time professor to teach CHEM 1202 – Organic Chemistry Labs. This one-semester course introduces students to the fundamental principles of organic chemistry. The focus is on familiarizing students with organic chemical structures, functional groups, nomenclature, basic physical properties, and reactions of organic compounds.

The laboratory component provides hands-on experience with techniques used in handling, isolating, and purifying organic compounds safely. Students will also be introduced to various technical glassware used in organic chemistry labs.

Responsibilities
  • Cultivate a positive learning environment that respects the diverse backgrounds, experiences, and learning styles of all students.
  • Employ adult education principles to actively engage students in the learning process.
  • Effectively utilize educational technologies to support student learning, manage grades, and deliver hybrid and online courses.
  • Develop curriculum using appropriate strategies and tools to assess student learning effectively.
  • Ensure that course and program curriculum remains current and relevant to industry standards.
  • Demonstrate initiative and work independently while collaborating effectively with students, the program team, and various stakeholders.
Qualifications
  • A relevant degree combined with industry credentials (a Master's degree is an asset).
  • A minimum of five years of recent and relevant work experience within the past three years.
  • Proven teaching experience at the post-secondary level, demonstrating a strong understanding and application of Universal Design for Learning and current assessment methodologies.
  • Experience participating in industry-led or community-based applied research is highly valued.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in using current technologies to support student learning and manage grades.
  • A commitment to lifelong learning and professional development.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders, including students, faculty, support staff, administrators, and community members.
  • Understanding of the Ontario college system.
