About the Role

The Government of Nova Scotia is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Relief Youth Worker to join our team in the Correctional Services division of the Department of Justice. As a Relief Youth Worker, you will play a critical role in the safe and secure custody, control, and supervision of sentenced and remanded persons in custody in a youth correctional centre.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide dynamic supervision of youth in custody and ensure their safety and security.
  • Participate in the case management of youth in custody, including approving and arranging professional and personal visits, and escorting youth in custody within the facility and in the community.
  • Respond to youth complaints and requests, and assist youth in the completion of forms and other tasks.
  • Supervise facility cleaning and maintenance, and submit maintenance work orders as required.
  • Advise youth of available programs and refer them to the posted program schedule.
  • Record and communicate information through reports, forms, logbooks, email, and JEIN documentation.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Criminology, Sociology, Psychology, Education, or Recreation, or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Direct experience in youth-oriented program delivery, preferably in a correctional setting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work well with minimal supervision and exercise discretion with confidential matters.
  • Strong leadership and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make good decisions and respond effectively in crisis situations.
