About Our Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Relief Youth Worker to join our team at the Government of Nova Scotia. As a Relief Youth Worker, you will play a critical role in the safe and secure custody, control, and supervision of sentenced and remanded persons in custody in a youth correctional centre on a rotating shift basis.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide dynamic supervision of youth in custody and ensure their safety and security.
  • Participate in the case management of youth in custody, including approving and arranging professional and personal visits and professional phone calls.
  • Supervise facility cleaning by youth and supervise persons in custody trustees on outside work detail.
  • Advise youth of available programs and refer them to the posted program schedule.
  • Record and communicate information through reports, forms, logbooks, email, and JEIN documentation.
Qualifications and Experience

We are looking for a candidate with a bachelor's degree in a related field, such as Criminology, Sociology, Psychology, Education, or Recreation. Direct experience in youth-oriented program delivery, preferably in a correctional setting, is also essential. An equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered.

Additional qualifications include:

  • Experience in law enforcement, security, or the military.
  • Previous employment as a Correctional Officer.
  • Knowledge or experience in a computerized/automated environment.
  • Leadership experience, including leading youth programs, groups, or committees.
