About Us

The Government of Nova Scotia's Correctional Services division is responsible for the administration and operation of community and custody-based programs and services for adults and young persons. Our core business area encompasses two programs: community corrections and correctional facilities. Each program area is broken down into closely related activities that have a specific impact on the program's target group.

Our Opportunity

We are seeking a Relief Youth Worker to join our team. As a Relief Youth Worker, you will be responsible for the safe and secure custody, control, and supervision of sentenced and remanded persons in custody in a youth correctional centre on a rotating shift basis.

Responsibilities
  • Provide dynamic supervision of youth in custody and ensure their safety and security.
  • Participate in the case management of youth in custody, including approving and arranging professional and personal visits and professional phone calls.
  • Escort youth in custody within the facility and in the community, and respond to youth complaints and requests.
  • Supervise facility cleaning by youth and supervise persons in custody trustees on outside work detail.
  • Advise youth of available programs and refer them to the posted program schedule.
  • Record and communicate information through reports, forms, logbooks, email, and JEIN documentation.
Qualifications and Experience

We are looking for a candidate with a bachelor's degree in a related field, such as Criminology, Sociology, Psychology, Education, or Recreation. Direct experience in youth-oriented program delivery, preferably in a correctional setting, is also required. An equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered.

Pay Grade: PR 04 - PR 11 Hourly Salary Range: $18.00 - $30.00 Hourly
