Western Libraries is seeking applications for a one-year Term Appointment as a User Experience (UX) Librarian. The successful candidate will collaborate with the Head of User Experience & User Services and be an integral part of the User Experience & Student Engagement team.

The UX Librarian will lead initiatives to enhance user experience in both digital and physical library settings. This role involves building relationships with diverse user communities and employing a user-centered design approach to assess and prioritize the needs of library users. The UX Librarian will also spearhead the development and execution of programs and projects aimed at enriching the overall library experience for the university community.

As a vital member of the User Experience & Student Engagement team, the UX Librarian will contribute to fostering a culture of user experience practice within Western Libraries, facilitating the creation of user-focused programs, services, and spaces. Cross-collaboration with various departments will be essential for ongoing service enhancement and for effectively communicating the library's value to its users. Additionally, the UX Librarian will engage in delivering user services to strengthen connections with library patrons.

Key principles such as inclusion, diversity, equity, accessibility (IDEA), along with Indigenization and decolonization, will drive the user experience initiatives, reflecting the university's commitment to fostering a sense of belonging on campus.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Analyze user behavior and needs to provide recommendations for improving both in-person and online services.
  • Identify and address barriers to inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility within the library's user experience.
  • Implement inclusive design principles on the library's website and digital interfaces, collaborating with stakeholders to prioritize enhancements.
  • Offer guidance on emerging technologies and services, working alongside Library Information Technology Services.
  • Conduct activities to understand the workflows and requirements of students and faculty, including forming library advisory groups.
  • Stay informed about user needs and trends in user experience and design, ensuring the library remains responsive to its community.
  • Lead efforts to create a cohesive user experience across all library environments.
  • Promote accessibility standards throughout the library's digital presence.
  • Conduct user experience research utilizing various methodologies to inform service development.
  • Identify and advocate for the adoption of effective new technologies.
  • Participate in the provision of library services from both physical and virtual locations.
  • Represent the library at relevant events and professional gatherings.
Qualifications and Experience:

Required:

  • Master's degree in Library and Information Science or a related field from an accredited institution, or a PhD in a relevant discipline.
  • Understanding of UX principles, methodologies, and best practices.
  • Experience in UX design, preferably in an academic context.
  • Proficient in conducting user research, including usability testing and surveys.
  • Ability to apply user-centered design principles to enhance user interactions.
  • Knowledge of information architecture and usability testing techniques.
  • Familiarity with web design principles and technologies.
  • Experience with both qualitative and quantitative research methods and tools.
  • Knowledge of library assessment practices.
  • Awareness of IDEA-ID in academic settings and experience working with diverse user groups.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills, including project management capabilities.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects effectively.
