Asahi Kasei Battery Separator Canada, a subsidiary of Asahi Kasei Corp., is a pioneering company in battery technology, supplying high-quality lithium battery separators to the global market. Our HiporeTM brand of separators has been a trusted choice for electric drive vehicles and consumer electronics since the early 1990s.
We are accelerating our growth strategy with investments in new facilities and capacity expansions to meet the increasing demand for electric vehicle applications. Our expansions are underway in the United States, Japan, and South Korea, with start-ups scheduled for the first half of 2026.
About the RoleWe are seeking a Process Engineering Manager to join our team in Port Colborne, Ontario, Canada. As a key member of our new plant start-up, you will be responsible for establishing the manufacturing process and driving continuous improvements. You will collaborate with other managers and guide/mentor the process engineering group.
Key Accountabilities- Provide direction, facilitation, and support for the daily execution of the Process Engineering department's operating plan
- Lead the construction of a new plant and build a local process engineering team
- Responsible for reporting area budget for Process Engineering
- Ensure disciplined operation of all equipment and processes consistent with standard operating procedures and standard operating conditions
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement and effective problem-solving
- Key Metrics for this role will be:
- Uptime (utilization of equipment)
- Quality (% of off-spec produced)
- Equipment reliability
- Execution of capital projects to budget and timelines
- Monitor engineering technician certification and progression in line with overall organizational direction
- Participate in root cause investigations to identify and mitigate systemic issues impacting productivity, quality, and safety of the process
- Develop and implement long-term strategic improvement plans for the facility
- Facilitate cross-functional effectiveness for planning and troubleshooting with functional groups – ESH, PEG, Warehouse, Maintenance, and Quality
- Challenge the status quo by developing and recommending modifications to existing processes and methodologies with a constant focus on continuous improvement and cost reduction
- Provide written and oral reports as required
- Provide individual feedback to engineers and technicians along with appropriate communications; resolve issues by analyzing data, investigating, identifying solutions, and recommending action
- Identify opportunities for improvement in plant efficiency
- Investigate manufacturing process problems, perform root cause analysis, and develop plans to correct and prevent future occurrences
- Identify and track performance indicators and make changes for improvement
- Maintain a positive work atmosphere and oversee the ongoing development of the Process Engineering department staff
- Participate in employee performance management (goal setting, performance expectations and standards, performance reviews, ongoing feedback, pro-active coaching, development planning, and corrective action); develop and maintain a sustainable system for the training, evaluation, and development of engineering staff
- Direct, maintain, and enforce the safety program for the process engineering departments; review safety records to uphold standards of maximum safety for all department staff and employees
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering required; Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering degree preferred; Master's degree a plus
- Must possess well-developed communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization
- Must possess strengths in collaboration, initiative, and attention to detail
- Must be able to maintain confidential information
- Must have the ability to work on a high-performing team creating an environment where open and honest communication is the norm
- Must have ability to build effective workplace relationships, motivating employees, and supporting employee development
- Must know how to evaluate the team's effectiveness and how to improve the team's performance
- Must be able to deal with conflict productively, bringing forth issues that need to be discussed and work to forge a mutually beneficial outcome
- Must be able and willing to travel up to 20% domestically and abroad for training and visiting other company locations
- Must be able and willing to work a flexible schedule for emergencies and to attend in-person meetings and conference calls outside of normal business hours
