The Indigenous Patient Navigator (IPN) plays a crucial role in facilitating connections between Indigenous communities and the healthcare system. This position is designed to enhance the accessibility of culturally appropriate care for Indigenous individuals by collaborating with community partners and regional health authorities. The IPN serves as a vital resource for both Indigenous clients and healthcare professionals, ensuring that care is delivered in a culturally respectful and client-focused manner. The role also emphasizes the importance of cultural safety and humility in healthcare practices, promoting training and education for staff within PHSA. Furthermore, the IPN fosters relationships between Indigenous communities and various PHSA programs and local clinics, ensuring a holistic approach to health care delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Offer consultative and navigational support to patients referred to PHSA services, ensuring cultural interpretation and health literacy are prioritized. Assist patients in their communications with healthcare providers, including physicians and nursing staff. Coordinate and facilitate access to services for patients within the designated healthcare region. Manage client referrals to and from interagency and Indigenous organizations, ensuring seamless transitions between services. Provide support within the hospital and community by establishing and maintaining relationships with Indigenous clients to assess their healthcare needs. Aid clients in understanding and navigating the healthcare system as needed. Advocate for patients' needs within the healthcare framework, liaising with community health organizations to enhance patient care. Serve as a resource for healthcare providers regarding culturally safe care practices. Coordinate spiritual care requests and access to sacred spaces to honor Indigenous beliefs and practices.

Required Qualifications

Preference will be given to Indigenous candidates as part of the Special Program Status under the BC Human Rights Commission.

A diploma or degree in a relevant health discipline, social sciences, or a clinical-related field, along with 1 to 3 years of recent experience in Indigenous healthcare.

Skills and Expertise

Proven experience working with Indigenous communities, with a strong understanding of their demographics, languages, cultures, and traditions. Familiarity with the regional healthcare system and community resources. Knowledge of cultural safety and competency in healthcare settings. Understanding of the impacts of Canadian colonization and Indigenous-specific racism on health outcomes. Excellent verbal and written communication abilities. Commitment to understanding and adhering to legislative obligations and provincial commitments outlined in foundational documents related to Indigenous rights and reconciliation. Strong awareness of the socio-economic and historical contexts affecting Indigenous Peoples, along with a commitment to anti-racism and cultural safety initiatives.
