Position Overview:

The Water Treatment Facility Technician will operate under the guidance of the appointed supervisor, who may not always be present on-site, to manage water treatment facilities and conduct maintenance on equipment related to water supply operations. The Technician will work on a rotating schedule of 12-hour shifts, including both day and night shifts, or oversee and maintain smaller systems at designated locations as required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct preventative maintenance on all mechanical systems within the facility.
  • Ensure compliance with the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System and adhere to established standard operating procedures.
  • Manage all operational processes during assigned shifts.
  • Inspect mechanical systems and make necessary adjustments.
  • Collect samples and perform routine analyses for process management.
  • Handle and mix chemicals, and operate equipment for chemical unloading.
  • Record daily readings and document any anomalies in operational processes.
  • Monitor and log data from weather station instruments daily.
  • Maintain accurate records as required by operational standards.
  • Perform maintenance checks on all equipment integral to the treatment facility.
  • Execute mechanical repairs as directed on facility equipment.
  • Operate all necessary equipment, including any additional machinery that may be acquired.
  • Ensure the water supply facility is kept in a clean and sanitary condition.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and regulations at all times.
  • Report any unsafe practices or conditions immediately.
  • Provide on-the-job training for personnel within the operator's bargaining unit and for trainees from other water supply organizations.
  • Conduct educational tours of the water treatment facility.
  • Perform additional duties as necessary for the effective operation of water treatment facilities.

Reporting Structure:

Reports to the Supervisor of Water Plants or the Superintendent of Water Supply Plants, or their designated representatives.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Completion of a two-year technical program related to Water Treatment. Equivalent combinations of education and experience in a water treatment setting may be considered.
  • Successful completion of the Operator-in-Training Water Treatment Certificate within six months of hire, and passing the Level 1 examination within one year.
  • Willingness to pursue further training opportunities available for water treatment operators.

Experience:

  • Relevant experience in the field. Familiarity with the operation of water treatment facilities is advantageous.

Other Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid driver's license.

Position Details:

This role is part of a unionized position with wage rates as per the collective agreement.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Mechanical aptitude with a foundational understanding of chemistry and electronics.
  • Preference for candidates with experience in pump operation and mechanical systems.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • General knowledge of computerized systems and familiarity with software relevant to water treatment operations is a plus.
  • Preparedness to wear necessary protective gear for specific tasks.
  • Willingness to undergo any required health assessments or immunizations.
