Energy Trader

TransAlta is seeking a skilled Energy Trader to join our team, reporting directly to the Manager of Trading and Mid-Marketing. This role is integral to the success and growth of the East Term desk, where the focus is on generating and executing speculative trading strategies while managing risk.
Key Responsibilities- Maintain a strategic focus on Eastern Power Markets, identifying opportunities for growth and optimization.
- Achieve an annual profit and loss target of $2-$5 million, managing risk and ensuring alignment with company objectives.
- Manage a Value at Risk (VaR) allocation of up to $1 million, making informed decisions to minimize risk exposure.
- Conduct analysis for new business lines and structured transactions, providing recommendations for growth and expansion.
- Conduct fundamental research and generate trade ideas in power and gas markets, staying up-to-date on market trends and developments.
- Provide backup support for Manager as needed, ensuring seamless execution of trading strategies.
- Preferred bachelor's degree in Engineering, Economics, Finance, or Mathematics, with a strong foundation in mathematical modeling and data analysis.
- Over 5 years of pertinent market and trading experience, with a proven track record of success in energy trading.
- Profound understanding of Eastern ISO markets, power generation fundamentals, fuels, FTRs/congestion, and risk management principles.
- Aptitude for rapid information processing and decision-making, with the ability to analyze complex data sets and make informed decisions.
- Extensive expertise in modeling commodities derivatives, with a strong understanding of financial markets and instruments.
- Proven capability to articulate strategy, risk assessment, and deal execution to colleagues and leadership, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated efficiency in time management for research, analysis, and continuous professional growth, with a strong commitment to ongoing learning and development.
