Position Overview:

The Waste Management Supervisor oversees the operational activities of various waste facilities and programs, focusing on recycling, composting, energy recovery, and hazardous materials management. This role involves monitoring performance metrics and suggesting enhancements to improve efficiency, particularly in areas such as expected waste volumes, vehicle management, and equipment upkeep.

Team Leadership: This position entails managing a team of professionals, ensuring equitable workload distribution, and adherence to established processes. The supervisor is responsible for mentoring and supporting team members to foster a productive work environment.

Strategic Development: The supervisor plays a crucial role in the ongoing research and implementation of effective strategies and guidelines in alignment with best practices in waste management. This includes evaluating program effectiveness and contributing to departmental planning and budgeting to meet organizational objectives.

Operational Guidance: The role requires identifying and executing strategies for long-term waste management and diversion. Maintaining communication with relevant governmental agencies and addressing customer service standards are key responsibilities, ensuring effective resolution of inquiries and complaints.

Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong leadership and organizational capabilities, with a knack for innovative problem-solving in dynamic environments.
  • Exceptional communication and analytical skills, with a business-oriented mindset.
  • Collaborative team player with project management expertise.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with administrative policies and diversity initiatives.
  • Proficient in relevant software applications.
  • Sound judgment and independent decision-making skills.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of solid waste management equipment.

Educational Background:

  • Required: Environmental Diploma.
  • Required: Manager of Landfill Operations (MOLO).
  • Additional certifications in waste management are advantageous.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Experience Requirements:

  • A minimum of seven years in municipal waste processing, including two years in a supervisory role.
  • Experience in public sector environments with both unionized and non-unionized staff is preferred.

Additional Requirements:

  • Criminal Record Check submission.
  • A valid Class Five Operator's License is preferred.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Potential exposure to unsanitary conditions; immunizations are recommended.

Safety Responsibilities:

As part of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, the supervisor is accountable for adhering to health and safety protocols, ensuring the well-being of employees and the public.
