We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Building Inspector to join our team at the City of Windsor. As a key member of our Inspections Department, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with the Ontario Building Code and related municipal bylaws.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct inspections of new and existing buildings to ensure compliance with approved plans, the Ontario Building Code, and reference standards.
- Review and inspect construction of plumbing and/or mechanical building systems for all buildings regulated by the Ontario Building Code.
- Verify installation and testing of fire suppression systems and the HVAC portion of life safety systems.
- Organize workload and document inspection results, including collection and attachment of photographs, documents, and concise reports.
- Liaise with property owners, contractors, engineers, architects, lawyers, and other departments on matters related to construction activity, by-law enforcement, and the Ontario Building Code Regulations.
- Investigate complaints and apply enforcement regarding contraventions of statutes, regulations, and bylaws.
- Advise Ministry of Labour of unsafe working conditions or sites and participate in investigations.
- Inspect fire-damaged or unsafe buildings to determine the extent of damage and required repairs or replacement.
- Inspect for partial and complete occupancy clearances.
- Prepare evidence for presentation before the provincial courts and represent the City in civil litigation.
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent combined with an additional year of post-secondary education in the field of Plumbing and/or Sheet Metal Worker.
- Provincial Qualifications from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs in General Legal/Process, H.V.A.C. House and Building Services, or Plumbing House and Plumbing All Buildings.
- Experience and education in the design and installation of building, plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
- Experience reading and interpreting plans, specifications, and data sheets pertaining to HVAC systems installations for compliance with the Ontario Building Code, ASHRAE standards, HRAI Design Manuals, and NFPA standards.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Building Code and other related standards.
- Knowledge of life safety systems and egress/exiting requirements.
- Knowledge and understanding of various municipal bylaws.
- Effective oral and written communication skills in all mediums.
- Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public.
- Good problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
- Knowledge and ability to apply the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations relevant to building construction.
- Additional Provincial Qualifications in Complex Buildings and On-site Sewage.
- Demonstrated accomplishments towards achieving additional qualifications administered by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing.
- Backflow prevention certification through the OWWA.
- Membership with the Ontario Plumbing Inspectors Association (OPIA) or the Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Institute (HRAI).
- Membership with the Ontario Building Officials Association along with CBCO designation.
