Job Title: Learning Commons Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Learning Commons Specialist to join our team at Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic DSB. The successful candidate will be responsible for operating and maintaining the school's Learning Commons, including collection management, circulation, cataloguing functions, and library technology.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Establish and manage a competent system of administration for the Learning Commons, ensuring efficient circulation procedures and effective use of space, time, and materials.
  • Assist staff and students in the use of a range of information sources, including print and computer databases, and provide guidance in locating materials.
  • Foster a love of reading and life-long learning by encouraging an interest and understanding in the use of books and other resources.
  • Display, promote, and compile learning materials and bibliographic sources to support and supplement curriculum programs.
  • Provide multi-space learning areas that support inquiry, play, and imagination in consultation with the school principal.
  • Classify and catalogue learning resources and maintain catalogue and inventory, applying technological advances in accordance with established Board procedures.
  • Purchase materials according to identified needs, staff recommendations, and budget allotment.
  • Establish the operation and maintenance of lending, renewing, reserving, and recalling system for materials and equipment.
  • Maintain an inventory and develop a system of control of all library software/hardware technology.
  • Consult with the school principal to update and maintain the school's Technology Plan as it applies to the Learning Commons.
  • Process materials, including installation of security strips, affixing bar codes, spine labels, school identification, and covering.
  • Make presentations to large and small groups of staff, students, or parents as required.
  • Monitor attendance and conduct of students in the Learning Commons.
  • Assist with the supervision of in-school and out-of-school student activities, including regular supervision duties.
  • Provide coverage for the school office as needed.
  • Collect and process monies according to established procedures.
Requirements:
  • Requires a two-year Library and Information Technician Diploma and one year of related work experience.
  • Requires experience in library automation software, office productivity software, collaboration software, Windows applications, and database management.
  • Requires a high level of oral and written communication skills to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with Board personnel, students, parents, public libraries, and other Library Resource Centre staff.
  • The ability to maintain, in the strictest confidence, information received concerning any Board or School matter.
