Junior Stationary Engineer

Overview
The 3rd Class Stationary Engineer plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe and effective operation, as well as the preventive and corrective maintenance of heating, cooling, and associated plant machinery across various campus facilities. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as necessary.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Planning
- Contributes to strategic initiatives that focus on the stewardship and long-term sustainability of the University’s facilities and infrastructure, aiming to enhance the efficiency of campus services and optimize investments in university-wide infrastructure.
Operational Duties
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Conducting maintenance and repairs on oil and gas-fired boilers, chillers, water softeners, high-purity water treatment systems, air compressors, and ammonia-based refrigeration units, along with related auxiliary equipment.
- Monitoring and operating utility plants, building automation systems, fire safety systems, and elevator services.
- Performing necessary maintenance and repairs to ensure the safe and efficient operation of equipment such as pumps, air compressors, water softeners, deionizers, ammonia-based refrigeration units, chillers, and cooling tower systems.
- Inspecting and maintaining HVAC, mechanical, and plumbing system components within buildings.
- Responding to various emergency situations, including fire alarms.
- Generating reports on equipment conditions and requisitioning necessary materials.
- Reporting to the Shift Engineer in the absence of the Chief Stationary Engineer.
- In the absence of a 2nd Class Stationary Engineer, may temporarily assume the role of Shift Engineer and perform related duties.
Health & Safety Compliance
- Upholds the University’s commitment to the safety and well-being of all faculty, staff, students, and visitors by ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, codes, and standards related to facilities operations, as well as occupational health and environmental safety. Actively participates in health and safety initiatives and incident prevention by adhering to departmental policies, procedures, and safe work practices as outlined by the University’s health, safety, and environment management system (HSEMS).
Additional Responsibilities
- May perform tasks of other trades as required, within the limits of their skills and code requirements, including duties of a lower pay band trade.
Qualifications
- A minimum of an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, along with an Ontario 3rd Class Operating Engineer Certificate.
- At least two years of recent experience as an Ontario-certified 3rd Class Operating Engineer.
- Familiarity with the operation and maintenance of oil and gas-fired boilers, chillers, water softeners, air compressors, and ammonia-based refrigeration units.
- Knowledge of boiler control and building automation systems is essential.
- Must possess a valid Ontario class 'G' driver's license or equivalent.
