Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Forensic Psychiatric Nurse to join our team at the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA). As a key member of our interdisciplinary team, you will provide direct care to patients with complex mental health and substance use challenges in our Minimum and Medium Security Units.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct care to patients in accordance with their individualized care plans, including administering medication, performing protocols and interventions, and implementing behavior management strategies.
- Collect and document patient health care information, including nursing observations, interventions, and evaluations of nursing care.
- Plan and implement direct care to promote the physical and psychological well-being of patients, including assessing clinical requirements, developing care plans, and evaluating outcomes.
- Consult with nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care planning and coordination.
- Support patients with psychosocial, life, and personal care skills, including teaching and providing guidance, supervising routine care, and identifying and pursuing advocacy issues.
- Maintain a safe environment for patients, families, and staff, including following established emergency procedures and safety practices.
- Participate in team meetings, continuing education, and corporate initiatives to promote optimal support for patients and staff.
Requirements
- Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
- One (1) year of recent experience working in a forensic or acute psychiatric hospital setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Current and updated knowledge of changes and developments in the practice of psychiatric nursing and applicable Federal and Provincial legislation.
- Broad knowledge of the diagnosis and treatment of behavioral, social emotional, and mental health/psychiatric issues in adults.
- Demonstrated organizational, facilitation, decision-making, and leadership skills.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare and maintain records, charts, and reports.
- Demonstrated ability to participate as a member of a multidisciplinary care team, work independently, and function as a nursing resource.
- Ability to operate related equipment.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
- Demonstrated skill in CPR techniques.
- Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
