Water Distribution Operator

The City of Ottawa's Water Distribution Branch is seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join our team as a Water Distribution Operator. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the City's water distribution system, ensuring the continuous and adequate supply of high-quality potable water to customers.
Key Responsibilities- Perform and assist with a variety of tasks related to the water distribution system, including maintenance, inspection, water quality testing, and component installation, replacement, or repair.
- Operate and maintain specialized tools and equipment, including drills, boring machines, valve turning machines, grinders, torque wrenches, impact hammers, pipe saws, chainsaws, and handheld water quality testing equipment.
- Work safely in hazardous environments, including traffic, confined spaces, trenches, adverse weather conditions, and in proximity to heavy construction equipment.
- Communicate effectively with the general public and other employees, and demonstrate strong interpersonal skills.
- Follow instruction and work as part of a team, and demonstrate initiative, strong judgment, reliability, and self-motivation.
- Completion of Grade 12.
- Minimum of 13 months of experience in a construction or utility operations and maintenance environment.
- Must obtain and maintain Ontario MOE Operator-in-Training Drinking Water Distribution Operator Certificate within the timeframe determined by the employer.
- Must obtain and maintain Ontario MOE Class 1 Drinking Water Distribution Operator Certificate within the timeframe determined by the employer.
- Must obtain Ontario unrestricted AZ or DZ class driver's license (or provincial equivalent) within the timeframe determined by the employer.
- Advanced knowledge of water main and appurtenance materials, installation standards and specifications, repair, maintenance, and operation principles.
- Intermediate knowledge of mathematics, chemistry, water system hydraulics, and conveyance principles.
- Intermediate knowledge of public health principles and water quality control, assurance, and disinfection procedures used within a water distribution system.
- Intermediate knowledge of current provincial legislation pertaining to drinking water systems.
- Advanced knowledge of health and safety procedures, equipment, and legislation.
