Hamilton, Ontario, Canada Johnson Electric Full time

As an Intermediate Mechanical Automation Designer, your primary focus will be on evaluating, conceptualizing, and engineering production automation systems. The ongoing development of innovative and advanced solutions will allow your engineering skills to be applied practically as we encourage our personnel to explore new ideas and test them in real-world scenarios. Our projects range from straightforward material handling to fully automated product inspection systems and comprehensive pump assembly lines. A solid understanding of various motion methods (both electrical and pneumatic) is crucial, along with a grasp of Design for Manufacture and Maintenance principles.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design mechanical systems for robotics and assembly, production gauges, error-proofing mechanisms, and equipment automation.
  • Assess engineering drawings and specifications to ascertain shape, dimensions, and material properties in the development of equipment and processes.
  • Conduct engineering calculations related to material strength, operational speeds, horsepower, temperature, pressure, and force as they pertain to project designs.
  • Evaluate designs and systems for adherence to relevant standards (e.g., machine safety, AGC, and/or client-specific requirements).
  • Collaborate with electrical designers to review electrical specifications concerning input and output devices.
  • Discuss machine operations and sequences with the project team.
  • Select suitable purchased components for mechanical assemblies and generate requisitions with accurate delivery timelines.
  • Create working drawings, detailed drawings, and bills of materials for equipment and assemblies using SolidWorks.
  • Review drawings for precision, material selection, machining techniques, finishes, and hardness.
  • Support the manufacturing team by addressing any challenges encountered during the assembly, debugging, and integration phases of projects.
  • Liaise with clients and internal technical and engineering teams, as well as vendors, to gather technical information and specifications.
  • Communicate design modifications to the AGC team or the respective manager.
  • Responsible for providing time estimates, resource needs, and updates on design tasks to the Automation Engineering Manager.
  • Occasionally supervise the mechanical design efforts at the project level, delegating tasks to team members.
  • Organize project documentation, including quotes, correspondence, requisitions, drawings, and schedules.
  • Assist in proposals and estimating mechanical design labor hours.
  • Contribute to the development of design and departmental standards.
  • Periodically oversee Co-op students and Junior Designers on various assignments.
  • Comply with all health and safety regulations and procedures.
  • Coordinate initiatives for continuous improvement.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in specialized equipment and/or automation design.
  • Experience with robotic cells and assembly systems is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks is required.
  • Familiarity with common machine shop techniques is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and develop solutions for complex design challenges, often from sketches or verbal instructions.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of pneumatic systems and electrical devices (e.g., switches, load cells, LVDTs) is essential.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal oversight.
  • Capable of both giving and receiving direction.
  • Ability to function effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, at all organizational levels in a professional manner.
  • High integrity and dependability, with a strong sense of urgency and results orientation.
