Role Summary
The Pathologist's Assistant plays a crucial role within UHN's Laboratory Medicine Program, which is recognized as a leader in diagnostic services. This position is integral to the surgical and autopsy pathology divisions, where the assistant will report to the departmental manager for operational responsibilities and to medical directors for specific tasks related to surgical pathology and autopsy.
Key Responsibilities
- Accurately describes and documents findings during specimen grossing procedures.
- Captures photographic documentation of specimens.
- Applies knowledge of medical-legal policies and protocols for handling specimens, ensuring patient privacy.
- Engages in quality management initiatives and adheres to safety practices to maintain a secure working environment.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science (BSc) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) with advanced coursework in anatomy and physiology.
- Proven experience in grossing surgical pathology specimens.
- Graduation from a NAACLS-accredited Pathologist Assistant training program is preferred.
- Current certification from CCCPA and/or ASCP or the ability to obtain certification is required.
- In-depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology, particularly in relation to disease presentation.
- Exceptional observational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team, including medical professionals and laboratory staff.
- Familiarity with standard safety protocols and laboratory hygiene practices.
- Knowledge of safe chemical handling and emergency procedures.
- Proficiency in the use of digital photography.
- Experience with tissue sampling for frozen section analysis.
- Competence in using Windows-based applications.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, along with problem-solving abilities.
- Good interpersonal and analytical skills.
- Capacity to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to function effectively as part of a team.
