As a Family Law Support Specialist, you will collaborate with the Team Lead of Assessment Services, working both independently and as part of a cohesive team across various locations to provide exceptional service to Albertans. Building strong relationships with Court Operations, the Judiciary, and the legal community is essential to ensure effective service delivery to clients and the operations of the Alberta Court of Justice.

Educate clients on communication and conflict resolution techniques to aid in dispute resolution. Identify and present options for clients to determine their preferred course of action. Provide ongoing assessments, information, support, and guidance to clients throughout their court journey.

Case Management

Facilitate negotiations and terms of consent for parties present in court, ensuring proper documentation for court review. Offer continuous court support, referrals, and resources to clients as required, managing cases for self-represented parties. Monitor procedural matters, including subsequent court filings and legal service requirements. Assess safety risks and potential barriers to service delivery, providing necessary support. Mediate resolutions between parties using conflict resolution skills, focusing on the needs and interests of all involved. Collaborate with Children's Services, Alberta Supports, legal representatives, and community organizations to coordinate services effectively.

In-Court Support

Assist with court appearances for specified Family Law Act applications, guiding parties toward resolution and providing educational resources. Support families with their concerns in the dynamic environment of the court system. Respond to requests and directives from the judiciary within the scope of your role.

Consultation and Public Relations

Develop and maintain effective working relationships with external stakeholders, including lawyers, legal aid organizations, community legal centers, shelters, and law enforcement, to ensure optimal client services.

Administrative Duties

Ensure timely and accurate entries in the Resolutions Services provincial database related to client services and court activities, adhering to established policies and procedures.

Ideal Candidate Profile

Exceptional verbal and written communication skills. Strong organizational and time management abilities. Keen attention to detail regarding documentation and legal files. Outstanding interpersonal, interviewing, assessment, negotiation, and decision-making skills. Ability to work independently under pressure while assisting clients in emotionally charged situations. Proven capability to collaborate effectively with both internal and external stakeholders. Awareness of evolving processes, legislation, social trends, and best practices in family law matters, applying this knowledge to enhance service delivery.

Qualifications

A Bachelor of Social Work Degree or related field, along with relevant experience in negotiation, mediation, and client assessments.

All applicants must submit a cover letter (approximately 300 – 400 words) detailing how their qualifications and experience align with this position. This will serve as a screening tool to evaluate writing and proofreading skills. Applications lacking a cover letter will not be considered.
