Position Overview

Under the guidance of the Mental Health Clinical Supervisor, the Community-Based Mental Health and Addictions Specialist will deliver comprehensive assessments, strategic planning, therapeutic interventions, and counseling services to children and their families. This role also involves providing expert consultations regarding community behavioral evaluations and interventions. The primary focus is to offer mental health and addictions counseling services through a holistic lens, aligning with the vision, mission, and core values of the Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority and the Anishnawbe Health Plan.

Key Qualifications:
  • Preference will be given to individuals of First Nations ancestry (OHRC, Part II, Special Employment).
  • A minimum of a two-year Social Work Diploma or a diploma in a related discipline, along with three years of experience in a social service environment within a First Nation Community.
  • At least two years of experience providing counseling services to First Nations children, youth, or their families.
  • A blend of training and practical experience with First Nations communities, cultures, traditions, and teachings.
  • The capability to fulfill the responsibilities of the position consistently.
Responsibilities:

In collaboration with the Clinical Supervisor, the Children's Mental Health and Addictions Specialist will:

  • Coordinate and deliver counseling, consultations, clinical assessments, therapy, and follow-up services for all clients, adhering to the agency's mandate and policies while employing a holistic approach for families and caregivers.
  • Manage counseling and case management for clients facing mental health challenges, ensuring coordinated care with consulting psychiatrists and local general practitioners.
  • Conduct mental health and addiction assessments, provide pre-treatment support for clients needing residential care, and offer counseling and healing services.
  • Complete certification in standardized assessment tools.
  • Prepare accurate written reports, assessments, and documentation in client files in accordance with the standards of the Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority.
  • Advise families on alternative services and assist them in connecting with community resources.
  • Facilitate access to traditional healing and cultural programming when appropriate.
  • Actively participate in team meetings and treatment conferences to ensure integrated service delivery through effective information sharing.
  • Contribute to the evaluation of mental health services and recommend necessary improvements to the Clinical Supervisor.
  • Complete all required performance statistics reports.
  • Engage in interagency meetings and case conferencing consultations related to clients.
  • Ensure collaboration with Bands and Council, First Nation Communities, Elders, schools, and related agencies in service provision, in line with the Mental Health Act.
  • Promote healthy lifestyles within First Nation communities through information sharing and agency promotion.
  • Provide education and training to agency staff and community members regarding behavioral assessment, planning, and intervention.
  • Report any incidents or suspicions of abuse to the Clinical Supervisor and ensure proper documentation is completed; participate in regular debriefing and supervision.
  • Respond promptly to crisis situations involving clients, including assessing and addressing high-risk behaviors.
  • Maintain certification in the Child and Adolescent Functional Assessment Scale (CAFAS) and other relevant initiatives.
