Job Summary

Halton Healthcare is seeking a skilled and compassionate Mental Health Assistant to join our team. As a Mental Health Assistant, you will play a vital role in providing support and care to patients with mental health needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide patient observation and supervision based on nurse/physician assessment, ensuring the safety and well-being of patients.
  • Alert assigned nurses to changes in patient presentation, promoting timely interventions and care.
  • Document observations as required by physician orders, maintaining accurate and detailed records.
  • Conduct routine patient checks to identify potential escalation or distress, reporting concerns to nurses promptly.
  • Accompany patients during transfers and appointments, both within and outside the hospital.
  • Support patients and clinical staff in ward activities and routines, fostering a positive and inclusive environment.
  • Develop and implement recreational activities to reduce agitation and increase patient engagement.
  • Assist with admissions, discharges, and transfers, ensuring a smooth and efficient process.
  • Support patients during dining room service, promoting social interaction and community building.
  • Participate in program-related committees, contributing to the development and implementation of mental health initiatives.
  • Ensure patient belongings are stored and organized properly, maintaining a safe and respectful environment.
  • Monitor patients entering and leaving the unit, maintaining a secure and controlled environment.
  • Respond to phone calls and inquiries from patients and families, providing empathetic and informative support.
  • Demonstrate expertise in chosen profession, consistently applying knowledge and skills in professional practice and hospital-based standards.
Qualifications
  • Ability to physically intervene and perform patient restraints as per hospital policy.
  • Post-secondary diploma in a related field required.
  • Education related to Mental Health or Healthcare experience required.
  • Observation skills and ability to identify potential escalation or distress.
  • Demonstrated understanding of mental health issues and challenges faced by mental health patients.
  • Demonstrated experience working with patients who may exhibit escalated or agitated behaviors.
  • Demonstrated skills in conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to be respectful, nurturing, recovery-oriented, and empathetic with patients and their families.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Prevention and Management of Aggressive Behaviour Course (Crisis Prevention Institute-CPI) within 6 months.
  • Working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office.
