Mental Health Support Worker

Halton Healthcare is seeking a skilled Mental Health Assistant to join our team. As a Mental Health Assistant, you will play a vital role in providing support and care to patients with mental health needs.
Key Responsibilities- Provide patient observation and supervision based on nurse/physician assessment, ensuring patient safety and well-being.
- Alert assigned nurses to changes in patient presentation, promoting timely interventions.
- Document observations as required by physician orders, maintaining accurate and up-to-date records.
- Conduct routine patient checks to identify potential escalation or distress, reporting concerns to nurses promptly.
- Accompany patients during transfers and appointments, ensuring safe and dignified care.
- Support patients and clinical staff in ward activities and routines, fostering a positive and inclusive environment.
- Develop and implement recreational activities to reduce agitation and increase patient engagement.
- Assist with admissions, discharges, and transfers, ensuring seamless transitions.
- Support patients during dining room service, promoting social interaction and mealtime enjoyment.
- Participate in program-related committees, contributing to the development of mental health services.
- Ensure patient belongings are stored and organized properly, maintaining a safe and clutter-free environment.
- Monitor patients entering and leaving the unit, maintaining a secure and controlled environment.
- Respond to phone calls and inquiries from patients and families, providing empathetic and informative support.
- Demonstrate expertise in mental health care, adhering to hospital-based standards and best practices.
- Ability to physically intervene and perform patient restraints as per hospital policy.
- Post-secondary diploma in a related field, such as mental health or healthcare.
- Education or experience related to mental health, with a focus on patient care and support.
- Strong observation skills, with the ability to identify and respond to patient needs.
- Demonstrated understanding of mental health issues and challenges faced by patients.
- Experience working with patients who exhibit escalated or agitated behaviors, with a focus on de-escalation techniques.
- Skills in conflict resolution and crisis management, with a focus on patient safety and well-being.
- Ability to work respectfully, nurturingly, and empathetically with patients and their families.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to document patient information accurately.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification.
- Working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office, with the ability to navigate electronic medical records.
- Prevention and Management of Aggressive Behaviour Course (Crisis Prevention Institute-CPI) within 6 months.
