Job Summary

The University of Ottawa is seeking a highly skilled Veterinary Care Specialist to join our Animal Care and Veterinary Service team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for providing high-quality veterinary care to a variety of laboratory animal species.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide daily clinical and preventive veterinary care, including anesthetic and surgical procedures, and biological specimen collection.
  • Assess and evaluate veterinary clinical cases at various University of Ottawa animal facilities.
  • Initiate and implement treatment plans in consultation with a veterinarian.
  • Monitor treatment progress and provide feedback to the veterinarian and research staff.
  • Perform routine sample collection procedures, such as blood collection, and urine/fecal collection as directed by an ACVS Veterinarian.
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate and complete animal clinical case records, document retention, and archiving.

Requirements

  • Diploma from a CVMA recognized (or equivalent) Veterinary Technical program.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience.
  • Bachelor of Science degree or a post-secondary degree from a relevant discipline is desirable.
  • Certification with the Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Science (CALAS) is desirable.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as writing skills for contribution to the development of internal standard operating procedures and policies.
  • Ability to remain congenial, tactful, and objective despite potentially conflicting views and priorities and interactive styles in a team environment.
  • Willingness and ability to work after hours, evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays as assigned.
  • Willingness to provide proof of vaccination history as per standard provincial protocols.
  • Willingness and ability to work with a respirator (e.g. PAPR).
  • Ability to multitask and to prioritize in an often challenging, quickly changing, and time-sensitive environment.
  • Bilingualism - French and English (spoken and written).
