Position Overview
The Campus Safety Officer plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of the university environment. This position involves conducting regular patrols of the campus and surrounding areas, providing a visible security presence, and responding to various emergencies, including medical and security incidents. The officer is tasked with securing buildings and safeguarding university property.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the primary point of contact for individuals reaching out via the security hotline during assigned shifts.
- Manage the opening, clearing, and securing of buildings and rooms according to established schedules and specific instructions.
- Perform consistent foot patrols across the campus, maintaining a strong visible presence to foster a sense of safety within the university community, deter crime, enforce university policies, and identify safety hazards.
- Support Student Life and Conference Services as needed, including securing areas and distributing keys.
- Respond promptly to emergency situations as they arise.
- Report significant incidents to university officials and emergency services immediately.
- Document incidents, policy violations, and thefts through detailed written reports.
- Provide insights regarding identified safety hazards and maintenance needs.
- Investigate alarm activations and reset systems as necessary.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills
- Completion of a post-secondary program in Law & Security Administration, Public Safety, or a related field, or graduation from a recognized Police Academy.
- Experience in a university or educational setting is preferred.
- Valid provincial Driver's License.
- Certification as a Medical First Responder or willingness to obtain it within six months of employment.
- Valid Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Checks.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with fluency in English; proficiency in additional languages is an asset.
- Familiarity with computer technology, Microsoft Office, and inventory management systems.
- Ability to maintain physical and mental readiness for emergency response.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse range of individuals, including students, faculty, and staff.
- Capability to recognize and address emergency situations efficiently and safely.
- Demonstrated professionalism and composure in high-pressure situations.
