Job Summary

The Clinical Extern role at Halton Healthcare is a transitional position that enables nursing students to gain valuable clinical expertise, specialty knowledge, and self-confidence. This role is designed to enhance team dynamics and contribute to overall patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Practice in a team-based model of care to provide support to patient care teams by assisting with basic clinical tasks under the supervision of a registered nurse.
  • Participate in patient assessments and contribute to the development of individualized care plans.
  • Assist the Care Team with:
    • Bathing and hygiene
    • Personal care
    • Turning and repositioning
    • Transfers using lifts and other transfer devices
    • Basic skin care
    • Setting up patients for meals and assisting with feeding
    • Purposeful rounding (Q1H) and reporting to the nurse
    • Answering call bells and addressing patient concerns
    • Contributing to the Transition of Care (TOA) process
    • Orientating patients and families to the healthcare environment
  • Contribute to the development of a positive patient experience by providing excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Qualifications
  • Baccalaureate Nursing Program (RN) in 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of study or Practical Nursing Program in final year of study.
  • Recent clinical placement at Halton Healthcare is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete patient care tasks as directed.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task with proven organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated confidence in knowledge, skills, judgment, and ability to function in a team-based model of care.
