Support Specialist for Students with Exceptional Needs

The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Support Specialist for Students with Exceptional Needs to join our team. As an integral member of our school community, you will provide essential support to students with diverse needs, promoting their academic, social, and emotional growth.
Key Responsibilities- Provide individualized support to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, developmental disabilities, and other exceptional needs.
- Collaborate with teaching staff to develop and implement personalized learning plans, ensuring students' needs are met.
- Assist with pool programs, academic support, and special programs, including physiotherapy exercises and stretches.
- Modify programs and support learning for students with learning disabilities, speech/language issues, and other challenges.
- Participate in outside yard duties, lifting, toileting, and/or pool duties as required.
- Develop and maintain positive relationships with Indigenous students, their families, and the Indigenous community.
- Support students academically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually, promoting their OSSD achievement.
- Prepare and adapt learning materials, programs, and environments to meet individual needs.
- Act as a mentor, advisor, and advocate for each learner, working with stakeholders to support their learning.
- Establish safety plans during breaks in regular programming for participating students.
- Community college diploma in Developmental Services Worker, Child and Youth Care/Worker, or equivalent.
- Minimum 1-2 years of related experience working with school-aged special needs children.
- Valid First Aid certification/CPR Level C.
- Completed Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, TCI, and/or Behaviour Management Systems (BMS) training.
- Ability to work collaboratively with teaching staff, parents, and community members.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of Ontario Curriculum and educational communication software (e.g., Dragon, Kurzweil).
