About the Role

The HSE Coordinator will play a critical role in ensuring the health, safety, and environmental management of our construction projects. Reporting to the HSE Manager, this position will be responsible for developing and implementing proactive safety cultures, providing coaching and mentoring to field personnel, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with site leadership to develop and facilitate a comprehensive safety program.
  • Act as a resource to field personnel, providing guidance and support on health, safety, and environmental matters.
  • Identify, document, and control hazards associated with the work site.
  • Investigate and document incidents, implementing corrective action plans as necessary.
  • Develop and maintain an HSE communication bulletin board to ensure required documentation is readily available.
  • Ensure safety equipment and personal protective equipment are in place and functioning properly.
  • Assist leadership in daily toolbox and weekly safety meetings, addressing action items as required.
  • Review and ensure compliance with Bird Construction and client safe work practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintain a field presence, documenting daily observations and reviewing hazard assessments and inspection forms.
  • Liaise with clients and crew to discuss HSE concerns.
  • Perform work site inspections in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in and lead ongoing orientation and training initiatives.
Requirements
  • Safety leadership through example.
  • Positive and collaborative attitude.
  • National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) designation required.
  • CRSP or Occupational Health and Safety Certificate an asset.
  • Standard First Aid – Advanced first aid an asset.
  • 5-10 years' HSE field experience.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Legislation.
  • Valid Drivers License.
  • WCB claim management understanding.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • End-User Fall Protection, Confined Space.
  • Ability to forge, grow, and maintain positive relationships with multiple groups.
  • Ability to remain objective and maintain a factual perspective when dealing with questions and inquiries.
  • Sense of urgency and ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, troubleshooting, problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to deliver a message to a large group.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a positive attitude.
  • Understanding of the dynamics of working with unionized and non-unionized trades.
