The Funeral Director plays a vital role in guiding families through the process of arranging memorial services, ensuring that all aspects align with the family's desires, organizational standards, and legal requirements.

As a licensed professional, this position is accountable for adhering to all relevant mortuary, health, and vital statistics regulations within the funeral establishment.

Key Responsibilities

Arrangement Consultation

  • Initiates contact with the deceased's family, demonstrating empathy and concern while gathering essential information and scheduling arrangement meetings.
  • May assist with the transfer of remains, ensuring respectful care and updating status in the company's software.
  • Welcomes family members and leads them through the arrangement process, assessing their needs and discussing available services and merchandise.
  • Collaborates with Funeral Services Counselors to present options for cemetery property and merchandise, ensuring all contracts are completed accurately.
  • Reviews and approves any modifications to service and merchandise contracts.

Service Direction

  • Confirms service arrangements and serves as the Master of Ceremonies for visitations, funerals, or graveside services, maintaining a professional and caring demeanor.
  • Conducts visual inspections of the deceased and the service arrangements, ensuring compliance with family expectations and contractual agreements.
  • Engages with families to fulfill their requests while identifying opportunities for pre-need services.

Event Coordination

  • Handles various event planning tasks, including coordinating music, floral arrangements, and catering services to meet family requests.
  • Prepares the event space, ensuring all elements are in place for a respectful and memorable service.
  • May perform additional duties such as ushering or assisting with transportation during services.
  • Represents the organization at community events to promote services and foster relationships.

General Duties

  • Operates under general supervision, continuously learning to apply licensure within the business context while ensuring compliance with regulations.
  • Proactively communicates with management regarding workload and seeks additional responsibilities when appropriate.
  • Adapts to new processes and structures as needed, demonstrating flexibility and accountability.

Qualifications

  • Education & Licenses
  • Graduated from an accredited mortuary science program.
  • Possesses a current Funeral Director license as mandated by provincial regulations.
  • Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Experience in the funeral industry is preferred.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong cognitive abilities, including problem-solving and quick learning.
  • Results-oriented with a focus on project advancement and overcoming obstacles.
  • Positive attitude and self-motivation to enhance industry knowledge.
  • Ability to establish professional and trusting relationships.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Public speaking capabilities to influence and gain consensus.
  • Proficient in database management and MS Office applications.
  • Work Environment
  • Work is conducted both indoors and outdoors across various weather conditions.
  • Professional attire is required when interacting with families.
  • Physical demands include prolonged periods of sitting or standing, as well as the ability to lift and move up to 150 pounds.
  • Flexibility in scheduling is necessary, as services may occur outside of standard business hours.

Compensation

  • $36.05 per hour
