Job Title: Equity Specialist

Join the University of Waterloo's Equity Office as an Equity Specialist, a key member of our team responsible for planning, implementing, and monitoring equity initiatives. As an Equity Specialist, you will provide support and guidance to campus members on navigating University procedures, manage initiatives in line with the Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism's strategic plan, and build strong partnerships with students, staff, and faculty.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement equity initiatives, managing projects, information, and logistics of project deliverables.
  • Implement and monitor equity-related initiatives assigned by the Director of Equity, preparing communications for key stakeholders and maintaining detailed documentation according to program requirements.
  • Evaluate initiatives and prepare reports to track progress, preparing necessary resources and tools based on relevant legislation and best practices to support the successful implementation of assigned equity initiatives.
  • Consult, advise, and guide campus members on equity, escalating sensitive issues to the Director of Equity as needed, and collaborate with stakeholders to build equity capacity.
  • Liaise with departments and groups in the university community on equity-related topics, building relationships with student groups, staff, and faculty, and facilitating input on key equity initiatives.
  • Respond to individual disclosures of equity-related concerns from staff and faculty, providing support and referrals based on individual needs, and utilizing anti-oppressive and trauma-informed approaches to support campus stakeholders who often present in distress.
  • Maintain an understanding of the legal and reporting requirements to provide accurate advice, support, and resources, and advocate on behalf of marginalized campus members where appropriate.
  • Collaborate with internal support units and external organizations to meet the needs of diverse members of the campus community, and engage in case management when required, particularly with cases presenting with more complex needs.
  • Work with the Director to identify equity issues and conduct related research, preparing research reports on equity matters, and preparing communication materials pertaining to strategic priorities.
Qualifications:
  • Master's degree or equivalent education and experience, with lived expertise and institutional/systemic knowledge of equity, diversity, inclusion, and anti-racism.
  • A minimum of 3 years' experience in implementing equity initiatives, applying equity frameworks to projects, project management, and understanding human rights, equity issues, and anti-oppressive frameworks.
  • Knowledge and expertise in disability justice and/or trans inclusion is an asset, as is experience working in a post-secondary environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the concepts of equity, human rights, inclusion, diversity, disability justice, de-colonization, and anti-oppressive frameworks, with the ability to apply knowledge to equity projects/plans.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral, for the preparation of reports and making presentations, as well as good facilitation skills to lead groups to productive outcomes.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, with the ability to work on confidential and sensitive matters with tact and discretion, and manage challenging conversations with stakeholders.
  • Ability to work well independently or in a team setting, with diverse individuals.
