Position Summary

The Wellness Navigator is essential in promoting the vision of 'Healthy, Vibrant and Self-determining BC First Nations Children, Families, and Communities' throughout British Columbia. This role operates within the framework of the decriminalization of small quantities of unregulated substances and employs a harm reduction strategy. The position engages with individuals, families, and communities, particularly those affected by substance use, to facilitate their wellness journey by connecting them to various supports and services while increasing awareness of policy changes.

Collaboration with individuals who have lived experience with substance use, as well as service partners and law enforcement, is a key component of this role, which is supported by coordinated planning and regular meetings.

As a health and wellness organization, FNHA adheres to the Provincial Public Health Order and has implemented a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy for all employees. Proof of vaccination will be required upon selection for employment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate the development of regional substance use and decriminalization literacy initiatives, providing tools and support to enhance community awareness and access to services.
  • Support the implementation of decriminalization measures.
  • Collaborate with local law enforcement to promote awareness of available supports and services.
  • Assist in knowledge translation and communication efforts related to decriminalization.
  • Contribute to monitoring and evaluation activities, including data collection and reporting regarding substance use and connections with affected individuals.
  • Recommend and implement practices to enhance access to substance use care and a variety of health and wellness programs.
  • Establish partnerships with community health and wellness service providers to promote the spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical well-being of community members and improve transitions in care.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Certificate in Substance Use specialization and relevant experience.
• Occupational Certification.
• First Aid Level 1 (with CPR), Hepatitis B vaccination, and flu vaccine.
• Naloxone training.

Knowledge, Skills & Attributes

• Extensive knowledge of the BC health care system and the current landscape of First Nations health in BC.
• In-depth understanding of Aboriginal/First Nations health and wellness needs.
• Strong grasp of person-centered care principles to provide holistic, integrated, and high-quality care that respects diversity and culture.
• Familiarity with harm reduction approaches to substance use recovery.
• Trauma-informed practice experience.
• Proficiency in motivational interviewing techniques.
