Occupational Health Nurse Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Occupational Health Nurse to join our team at Sault Area Hospital. As an Occupational Health Nurse, you will play a critical role in promoting the health, safety, and well-being of our healthcare workers.
Job Summary:The Occupational Health Nurse will provide health services to healthcare workers aimed at prevention, treatment, maintenance, and rehabilitation. This includes conducting workplace surveillance and health risk identification, participating in outbreak surveillance and management, and providing first aid and blood pressure monitoring.
Key Responsibilities:- Conduct workplace surveillance and health risk identification
- Participate in outbreak surveillance and management
- Provide first aid and blood pressure monitoring
- Conduct communicable disease surveillance
- Provide blood-borne pathogen exposure counselling and follow-up
- Complete required reporting for diseases of public health significance and adverse events following immunization (AEFIs) in accordance with the Health Protection and Promotion Act
- Work collaboratively with the Occupational Health & Safety Officer to identify and mitigate health hazards
- Manage and surveillance of occupational dermatitis
- Complete occupational health onboarding for new healthcare workers
- Provide direction to workers experiencing symptoms of a communicable disease
- Responsible for vaccine storage and handling and inventory
- Health Promotion and Protection
- Provide a broad range of immunization services
- Lead and participate in healthcare worker immunization campaigns/clinics, including, but not limited to, influenza and COVID-19
- Implement best practices for immunization, communicable disease control, and occupational health to promote health and wellness in healthcare workers
- Conduct contact tracing for communicable disease exposures in healthcare workers
- Maintains current knowledge of best practices, including appropriate literature, policy, and legislative requirements, and implements improvements and changes as appropriate
- Provide mental health support to healthcare workers
- Rehabilitation and Case Management
- Collaborate with Ability and Attendance Consultants as appropriate to support return to work
- Actively participate in development of RTW program as required
- Case management for healthcare workers reporting symptoms of or exposure to a communicable disease
- Policy and Program Development
- Develops, maintains, and updates departmental medical directives
- Identifies the need for new policies and practices, participates in the development or revision, and provides leadership in implementation and evaluation of guidelines, professional standards, and policies that impact the department.
- Acts as a resource to leaders to interpret and apply occupational health policies
- Works with leaders and clinical educators to develop and deliver education to staff
- Participate on committees as assigned
- Deliver presentations related to departmental policies or initiatives
- Deliver staff education through multiple means (LMS modules, presentations, huddles)
- Maintain occupational health records in accordance with applicable legislation and professional standards
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing
- Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse (RN) in good standing
- Completion of RN prescribing education approved by the College of Nurses of Ontario or willingness to complete
- Completion of Mental Health First Aid or ASIST Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training or willingness to complete
- Experience in health policy, program, and medical directive development
- Demonstrated knowledge and skill in program development, evaluation, and education
- Demonstrated proficiency in establishing effective interpersonal relationships, consensus building, conflict resolution, consultation, and coaching/mentoring with both internal and external partners
- Demonstrated proficiency in communication (written and verbal), group facilitation, problem-solving, change management, and innovation.
- Knowledge of applicable Ontario laws and regulations related to occupational health and communicable disease control
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently as a team member in a fast-paced environment in stressful situations
- Ability to set priorities, manage competing demands, demonstrate sound judgment, and strong problem-resolution skills
- Ability to achieve goals and objectives within specified time frames
- Ability to work independently and plan and prioritize work as required
- Computer literacy in a Microsoft environment
- Ability to maintain successful working relationships with the interdisciplinary team
- Ability to organize time effectively to perform the duties of the position.
- Ability to meet and interact with people in a pleasant, professional, responsible, and reassuring manner
- Behaviour consistent with Hospital Mission, Values, and Standards of Performance
- Ability to read, write, and communicate to perform the duties of the position
- Human relations skills including empathy, sensitivity, understanding of human and organizational behavior, motivational techniques, and counseling skills
- Knowledge of best practices for infection/communicable disease control, immunization, and occupational health.
- Knowledge and understanding of the standards of practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
