Position Overview:

The selected candidate will engage in the creation of a Machine Learning algorithm aimed at assessing the safety of underground mine structures by analyzing audio data from tool impacts on surfaces.

This initiative is conducted under the guidance of Prof. Travis Wiens within the Department of Mechanical Engineering, in partnership with a leading mining company and supported by a national research funding agency.

A comprehensive dataset comprising audio recordings of tool impacts on mine walls and ceilings is already available, with ongoing enhancements by other team members. These recordings are categorized as either "drummy" (indicating unsafe conditions) or "tight" (indicating safety), as determined by seasoned mining experts.

The Post Doctoral Fellow will be tasked with leveraging cutting-edge machine learning techniques to develop and refine an algorithm capable of predicting the safety classification of audio recordings.

The work environment will primarily be office-based, though site visits to underground mining operations may be beneficial for gaining insights and potentially gathering additional data or improving the data collection methodology.

Flexible working hours will be accommodated, aligning with standard university schedules, and part-time remote work options are available.

Regular progress updates will be expected, both for the supervising professor and for industrial collaborators and funding bodies.

Candidates should possess a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline obtained within the last five years.


Qualifications:
  • Proven experience in developing machine learning algorithms with limited datasets, particularly in time-series data.
  • Expertise in dataset feature engineering and dimensionality reduction techniques.
  • Demonstrated capability to lead and contribute to published research in reputable journals or peer-reviewed conferences.
  • Experience in recording and processing audio data.
  • Proficiency in Python for machine learning applications.
  • Familiarity with rock mechanics and mining operations.
