Laboratory Analyst

Oil Sands Laboratory

Location: Fort McMurray, Alberta

The laboratory operates on a client site and plays a crucial role in ensuring timely and precise turnaround times (TAT) to assist in monitoring operational parameters for optimal production efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

The primary duties encompass, but are not limited to:

  • Operating various analytical instruments such as Gas Chromatographs, Viscometers, Digital Density Meters, Dean Stark apparatus, and conducting particle size analysis for petroleum operations.
  • Preparing samples for analysis.
  • Adhering to established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Delivering high-quality analytical results accurately and punctually.
  • Handling glassware and equipment for extraction, reflux, and preparation efficiently.
  • Maintaining calibration, quality control records, and routine maintenance of analytical equipment.
  • Troubleshooting analytical equipment on a daily basis.
  • Complying with Bureau Veritas's policies, certifications, and accreditations.
  • Participating actively in the Health and Safety Program, including meetings, near-miss reporting, and hazard assessments.

Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • A Post-Secondary Diploma or Degree in a relevant field (e.g., BS, Petroleum/Chemical Technician).
  • Proven experience as a Laboratory Technician or Analyst is advantageous.
  • Comprehensive understanding of sample handling procedures to maintain sample integrity and compliance with laboratory protocols.
  • Familiarity with laboratory Occupational Health and Safety practices for handling hazardous materials safely.
  • Strong manual dexterity, record-keeping, analytical skills, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Adaptability to perform diverse tasks in response to shifting priorities.
  • Effective time-management, communication, multitasking, and prioritization skills.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • A positive attitude with the ability to thrive in a dynamic environment.
  • Capability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.

Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum Education: Diploma in a relevant field (Required).
  • 1-2 years of experience in a related field (Preferred).

Work Schedule:

  • Shift work - 12-hour shifts.
  • The rotation includes 14 consecutive day shifts followed by 14 days off, alternating with 14 night shifts and then 14 days off.
  • Local applicants: Transportation to/from site provided and camp accommodations available.
  • Applicants from other regions may qualify for a fly-in/fly-out schedule with camp accommodations.
