Ka Ni Kanichihk Inc. is a nonprofit organization that is community-driven and Indigenous-led, dedicated to providing a variety of programs and services that are culturally relevant and focused on the overall wellness and empowerment of Indigenous Peoples.

Position Overview

As a vital member of the Leading Black Wolf team, the Youth Development Mentor plays a crucial role in offering transitional support to young individuals aged 16 to 21 who are transitioning from Child and Family Services. This position involves providing personalized mentorship aimed at enhancing life skills while facilitating culturally enriching activities and leveraging community resources.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establishing realistic and achievable goals in collaboration with Mentees
  • Nurturing the unique strengths and talents of Mentees while tailoring support and resources to their needs
  • Instructing on essential life skills, including budgeting, housing access, childcare navigation, and understanding healthy relationships
  • Engaging in participant recruitment and retention; addressing concerns and resolving issues
  • Exemplifying responsible, engaged, and positive behavior
  • Integrating traditional knowledge throughout all aspects of the program
  • Organizing and facilitating a diverse range of youth activities
  • Fostering a creative, holistic, and genuine mentorship environment
  • Communicating any concerns, inquiries, or challenges to the Coordinator
  • Adhering to organizational safety protocols and procedures, including participant transportation as necessary

Ideal Candidate:

  • Proven understanding of mentorship dynamics with vulnerable youth
  • An active mentor who ensures participants can access resources without barriers
  • Proficient in maintaining detailed case notes and producing necessary reports
  • Proactive in program planning, preparation, and facilitation
  • Advocate for harm reduction and trauma-informed practices
  • Builder of strong, trusting relationships with participants and stakeholders
  • Demonstrator of cultural knowledge and competence
  • Familiar with youth and community resources, capable of assisting in system navigation

Qualifications:

  • Relevant post-secondary education or a combination of education and experience
  • One to two years of experience working with vulnerable youth
  • A valid Manitoba Driver's License, clear driving record, and reliable transportation
