The national model construction codes are developed through a collaborative effort, drawing on the expertise of professionals from across Canada and around the globe. These codes establish essential building and safety regulations that are consistent nationwide.

As a Technical Language Specialist, you will be responsible for producing precise translations from English to French for various documents published by Codes Canada, the National Master Specification (NMS), and the Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC). Your work will include translating proposed change forms, intent statements, user guides, code inquiries, presentations, training materials, evaluation reports, and content for the Codes Canada, NMS, and CCMC websites. Additionally, you will edit translations and undertake other related tasks as required.

You will collaborate with a team of editors, translators, and IT professionals to ensure the highest quality of output.

Educational Background

A university degree in Translation (English to French) is required. Candidates with a lesser degree or a degree in a different field, combined with substantial training and/or experience, may also be considered.

Membership in a recognized professional translators' association, such as ATIO, OTTIAQ, or CTINB, is an asset.

Experience Requirements

  • Recent experience (minimum one year within the last five years) in translating technical or legal documents from English to French.
  • Recent experience (minimum one year within the last five years) in editing French technical or legal documents.
  • Recent experience (minimum one year within the last five years) utilizing terminology databases and computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools.

Language Proficiency

Bilingual proficiency in both English and French is essential.

Technical Skills

  • Comprehensive understanding of the translation and editing processes, including the ability to analyze source texts for content, style, and terminology, ensuring the translation accurately reflects the author's intent.
  • Proficiency in publication software, including Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat, as well as familiarity with markup languages such as XML and HTML.
  • Knowledge of the terminology and specific needs of technical professionals in the Canadian construction sector.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and sound judgment.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.

Compensation

The salary range for this position is from $70,852 to $95,230 per annum. NRC employees benefit from a comprehensive package that includes health and dental plans, vacation, sick leave, disability insurance, and pension plans.
