Job Title: Safety Advisor

Valard, a leading utility contractor in Canada, is seeking a highly skilled Safety Advisor to join their team. As a key member of the Health and Safety Department, you will play a vital role in maintaining a world-class safety culture across the organization.

Job Summary:

The Safety Advisor will provide support to supervisors, foremen, and workers in the field, ensuring compliance with Valard's Health and Safety Manual and relevant legislation. This role requires strong leadership and coordination skills, with the ability to monitor, audit, and report on safety findings and corrective actions.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide visible support and guidance to field staff on safety procedures and protocols.
  • Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of Valard's Health and Safety Manual and applicable legislation.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and audits to identify potential hazards and implement corrective actions.
  • Investigate incidents and develop incident reports, ensuring timely submission to the project supervisor and Regional Safety Manager.
  • Collaborate with project management to ensure new hires are properly oriented and trained on safety procedures.
  • Develop and maintain a safety board with current postings, including health and safety policies, inspection results, and project hazard assessments.
  • Perform observations, inspections, and emergency preparedness drills, reviewing and communicating findings via safety meetings and postings.
  • Participate in audits, such as 18001, COR, and owner audits, and review field findings to identify trends and implement corrective actions.
  • Develop and maintain a corrective action log, communicating significant issues or concerns with the project manager, supervisor, and foreman.
  • Facilitate weekly safety meetings, capturing minutes and action items, and follow up on completion.
  • Prepare weekly and monthly safety reports, liaising with clients to negotiate successful outcomes when issues arise.
Requirements:
  • National Construction Safety Officer Certification or Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) College or University Certificate or diploma program.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Minimum 3 years Health and Safety experience in a construction environment.
  • Excellent incident investigation skills.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to perform under stressful conditions.
  • Analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
  • Effective organizational skills.
  • Stress management skills.
