Director of Sustainability Reporting & Analytics

Overview

The Director of Sustainability Reporting & Analytics holds the primary responsibility for overseeing sustainability-related financial disclosures, encompassing the following key areas:

  • Stay informed on evolving sustainability reporting standards and collaborate with the Sustainable Investing (SI) team to implement OTPP's sustainability reporting framework that meets new regulatory demands.
  • Ensure OTPP gathers necessary data for sustainability metrics and disclosures.
  • Provide advocacy and thought leadership on sustainability reporting both internally and externally.
  • Conduct analyses and calculations related to the Portfolio Carbon Footprint, benchmark against targets, and manage external audits in conjunction with SI on methodologies.
  • Oversee metrics related to Green Bond reporting, manage external audits, and contribute to annual Green Bond disclosures.

The sustainability information collected is utilized for regulatory compliance and management reporting, aiding the Investment Division and Total Fund Management in making informed investment and strategic decisions.

Collaboration

  • This role leads the Sustainability Reporting and Analytics team, composed of financial analysts specializing in sustainability analysis and reporting.
  • The Director serves as a direct resource to the Managing Director of Valuation & Analytics and the CFO, expected to provide recommendations and decisions on complex sustainability measurement and reporting issues.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting

  • Ensure the team consistently monitors and delivers ongoing sustainability analysis, including the Portfolio Carbon Footprint (PCF) and metrics for the Green Bond report, while measuring these against established targets.
  • Oversee the monthly measurement, tracking, and reporting of OTPP's PDF, including managing the external audit process.
  • In alignment with Finance Transformation initiatives, automate and enhance sustainability calculations and management reporting, exploring advanced analytics capabilities such as predictive analytics and sensitivity analyses, while promoting self-service tools like PowerBI.
  • Define new reporting requirements based on best practices and stakeholder needs, ensuring compliance with emerging regulations.
  • Collaborate with SI to contribute significantly to OTPP's Green Bond report and sustainability disclosures in OTPP's Annual Report.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with other Finance groups to ensure efficient coordination of efforts.
  • Foster relationships with key stakeholders, including SI and Investment departments, to understand their sustainability measurement and reporting needs and address their inquiries.
  • Act as the senior-level contact for escalated sustainability measurement and reporting issues.
  • Work closely with SI to develop and implement enhanced reporting disclosures and measurements, including accounting for financed emissions.
  • Engage with other pension plans, sustainability reporting advisors, and industry participants to stay updated on current and emerging sustainability measurement and reporting practices, integrating new methodologies and regulatory requirements into existing reporting frameworks.

Technology Oversight

  • Oversee the development and enhancement of the Portfolio Carbon Footprint tool and Climate Change Dashboard.
  • Collaborate with SI and Enterprise Operations (EOD - IT) to maintain and improve the PCF tool and its reporting capabilities.

Management Responsibilities

  • Evaluate the team's mandate, composition, and skills, recommending changes as necessary.
  • Plan and develop strategic initiatives for the Sustainability Reporting and Analytics team.
  • Lead, recruit, train, and motivate a team of specialists in sustainability measurement and reporting.
  • Manage performance evaluations, career development, and coaching for team members.
  • Oversee on-the-job training and approve external training opportunities based on team recommendations.
  • Recommend staffing and compensation adjustments for team members.

Decision-Making Authority

  • Serve as a direct resource to the Managing Director of Valuation & Analytics and the CFO, expected to make informed recommendations and decisions on complex issues based on team research.
  • Interact with the Senior Leadership team organization-wide, considering the implications of decisions across the division and organization.
  • Identify opportunities and develop solutions where precedents may be lacking, requiring a high level of analytical thought and independent judgment.

Qualifications

  • Approximately 10+ years of relevant professional experience in investment valuation, analysis, or financial reporting, with at least 5 years in a managerial role.
  • University degree, preferably with a CBV, CFA, or MBA.
  • CPA designation.
  • Strong technical valuation expertise and analytical skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of investment analysis and assessment.
  • Sound valuation skills with an awareness of sustainability-related risks affecting value.
  • Understanding of the relationship between ESG risk and value.
  • Strong project management capabilities.
  • Direct experience in valuation and sustainability risk monitoring and reporting.
  • Experience in financial services is essential, with a preference for pension or investment fund experience.
  • Proficient in project management and special projects.
  • Extensive experience with MS Office products.
