The Advancement Officer collaborates closely with the Director of Development, senior leadership, faculty, and the Advancement team to formulate strategic objectives and oversee fundraising initiatives, focusing on cultivating a major gift portfolio for a designated School, Faculty, or Division.
As this role is essential for enhancing philanthropic support and promoting increased engagement from students, alumni, and the community, the officer will efficiently manage development activities, including fundraising campaigns, prospect research, alumni relations, and donor stewardship. The position involves identifying potential supporters, nurturing relationships, and conducting face-to-face meetings both independently and in partnership with faculty and other advancement personnel.
The Advancement Officer must possess the ability to establish, nurture, and sustain strong relationships with individuals, corporate donors, and charitable organizations. Staying informed about trends and best practices in philanthropy and fundraising, as well as the non-profit sector, is crucial.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The responsibilities encompass, but are not limited to, conducting research, developing prospect lists, and executing cultivation and stewardship plans, all while working towards medium gift solicitations for Thompson Rivers University. The Advancement Officer will be tasked with creating and implementing comprehensive strategies and tactical plans aimed at identifying, cultivating, and securing both short-term and long-term revenue streams to ensure the sustainable financial growth of a specific School, Faculty, or Division.
The Advancement Officer provides guidance, support, and direction across various domains:
- Produces and refines collateral, proposals, and cases for support to effectively promote the fundraising initiatives of the respective faculty or department.
- Designs and executes plans for fundraising initiatives and special projects as required.
- Composes proposals, donor solicitation letters, and grant applications to secure funding for student scholarships, research, and capital projects.
- Collaborates with senior members of the Advancement team to identify key alumni, individuals, and businesses for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship purposes.
- Engages closely with assigned prospects and donors, providing weekly updates to the Director of Development regarding progress with these individuals.
- Responsible for making a minimum of 1-2 solicitations per month and/or supporting significant asks under the guidance of the Director of Development.
- Maintains regular communication with prospects and donors to help ensure fundraising objectives are achieved.
- Ensures a targeted number of prospects attend Foundation fundraising events and manages RSVPs effectively.
- Cultivates relationships with prospects and donors through personal introductions and participation in social events.
- Handles sensitive and confidential information with appropriate tact and discretion in all interactions with donors, alumni, and community members.
- Acts as a representative of the University in all dealings and communications with alumni and donors.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS
- University degree in a relevant field
- 2-3 years or more experience in a fundraising or similar capacity
