About the Role

As a Building Inspector with the City of Chilliwack, you will play a vital role in ensuring that all construction projects within our jurisdiction adhere to the highest safety and building codes. You will be responsible for reviewing plans, conducting inspections, and providing guidance to developers, contractors, and homeowners.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review building designs, materials, and devices to ensure compliance with relevant bylaws, regulations, and codes.
  • Process and issue building permits in accordance with the BC Building Code for various building types, including single-family residences, ancillary buildings, and agricultural structures.
  • Conduct on-site inspections to verify that construction work meets approved plans and code requirements.
  • Provide technical information and guidance to the public regarding building codes and regulations.
  • Prepare reports and correspondence related to building inspections and permit applications.

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12.
  • Level 1 certification in accordance with the Provincial Regulations and Building Officials' Association of BC.
  • Working knowledge of the BC Building Code, particularly for single-family dwellings and ancillary buildings up to 600m2 and 3 storeys in height.
  • Valid B.C. Driver's Licence.

Skills & Experience

  • Ability to read and interpret building construction plans and drawings.
  • Strong understanding of fundamental code concepts related to building design and construction.
  • Enrolment in a Red Seal journeyman carpenter program or a diploma in Building Technology (to be completed within 3 years).
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in the building trades.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
