Building Inspector

_**Position Overview**:_As a Building Inspector, you will play a vital role in ensuring compliance with building codes, regulations, and standards within the community. You will inspect residential, commercial, and industrial buildings during various stages of construction, renovation, or alteration. Your objective will be to promote public safety, enforce building standards, and ensure the structural integrity of buildings within your designated area.

**Building Inspections**:
- Conduct comprehensive inspections of new construction, renovations, and alterations.
- Review plans and specifications.
- Perform on-site inspections at various construction stages.
- Ensure compliance with safety standards and building codes.
**Code Compliance**:
- Evaluate building designs, plans, and specifications for compliance with codes and regulations.
- Identify and report non-compliance issues, potential hazards, and structural deficiencies.
- Recommend corrective actions to ensure adherence to codes.
**Documentation and Reporting**:
- Prepare detailed inspection reports.
- Document findings, observations, and recommendations.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, permits, violations, and enforcement actions.
- Communicate inspection results to relevant stakeholders.
**Permitting Process**:
- Collaborate with applicants to address deficiencies and provide guidance for approval.
**Consultation and Technical Support**:
- Provide guidance and technical expertise to architects, engineers, contractors, and property owners.
- Respond to inquiries and clarify building code requirements and regulations.
**Enforcement and Compliance**:
- Enforce building codes, laws, and regulations through inspections and follow-ups.
- Issue warnings, notices of violation, and stop-work orders as needed.
- Collaborate with other regulatory agencies, such as fire and health departments.
- Other duties as required or assigned.
**Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities**
- Comprehensive understanding of local, provincial, and national building codes.
- Familiarity with the British Columbia Building Code and National Building Code of Canada.
- Strong knowledge of construction methods and building practices.
- Understanding of materials and systems used in construction.
- Well-versed in safety standards and protocols.
- Knowledge of fire safety, structural integrity, electrical systems, and accessibility requirements.
- Ability to read and interpret architectural plans and engineering blueprints accurately.
- Effective communication with contractors, architects, engineers, and property owners.
- Proficient in writing detailed reports.
- Detail-oriented to identify potential issues or deviations from building codes.
- Critical thinking and solution-oriented approach to complex construction challenges.
- Understanding of sustainable and energy-efficient building practices and green building principles.
- Proficient in using software tools for inspections, documentation, and reporting.
- Professional and courteous interaction with various stakeholders.
- Must be physically fit and able to perform manual labour for extended periods of time in all weather conditions.
**Training, Education, Certification, and Experience**
- Completion of Grade 12, plus graduation from a technical institute in Building Technology OR completion of a recognized apprenticeship in carpentry, considerable related journeyman experience plus experience as a Building Inspector 1.
- Minimum of 2 years or more related experience
- Certification of BOABC Level 1,2 or 3 or eligibility for certification by the Building Officials' Association of British Columbia.
- A valid Class 5 Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia
- Experience working with First nations communities or equivalent experience
- Experience in ground maintenance, including lawn care and gardening, is preferred.
Satisfactory Criminal Records check
**Working Conditions and Physical Demands**
- Combination of office work and on site inspections within community
- Regular exposure to various weather conditions during fieldwork
- Frequent standing, walking, climbing and occasional working at heights or confined spaces.
- Regular travel within community
- Strict adherence to safety protocols and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) during site visits.
- Frequent interaction with contractors, developers, homeowners and community members
**HOW TO APPLY**
Pay: $43.89-$49.90 per hour
Expected hours: 35 per week
