Mechanical Design Engineer Lead

As a key member of our Mechanical Design team, you will collaborate directly with all supporting departments, including Applications and Project Management, to ensure project specifications are met and executed on schedule and within budget.
What You'll Be Doing- Lead the mechanical design of projects from conception to completion, leveraging your high level of technical expertise, professionalism, engineering skills, and consulting experience.
- Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and supervision to assigned mechanical design team members.
- Analyze customer specifications and processes to develop comprehensive conceptual designs for proposed systems. This may include supporting design calculations, schematics, recommendations for third-party equipment, and exploration of new technologies and processes.
- Foster creativity and resourcefulness in all interactions with external and internal customers to address any issues or concerns that may arise during the project lifecycle.
- Assist in developing project plans, budgets, resource requirements, and coordinating the efforts of the design team.
- Work closely with Project Management to provide support, status reports, and ensure a seamless transition during the assembly, build, and integration phases of the project.
- Identify potential quote deficiencies, risks, scope changes, or creep, and submit recommendations to the Director of Engineering.
- Collaborate with the Project Management team to ensure timely updates to the project schedule.
- Build strong relationships with internal customers (e.g., Sales, Applications, Project Management, Shop Floor Assembly, Purchasing) as well as external contacts including customers, consultants, and third-party vendors.
- Promote a collaborative and inclusive work style with the project team to conduct design reviews, input/output analysis, functional reviews, safety risk assessments, certification support, design evaluations, and modifications as needed.
- Evaluate various mechanical products under consideration for purchase to determine their efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
- Produce accurate CAD layouts, manufacturing drawings, and bills of material.
- Review, evaluate, and improve upon engineering designs prepared by the design team.
- Ensure that designs are safe, efficient, effective, and manufacturable prior to release for production.
- Review team drawings for accuracy, material selection, proper machining techniques, finishes, hardness, etc., and approve their release for manufacturing.
- Review assembly bills of material prepared by the design team and approve them for the purchase of third-party items.
- Assist the shop floor assembly team during the integration phase to resolve any issues and contribute to the successful completion of the system.
- Create and maintain comprehensive project documentation.
You are a highly motivated and experienced mechanical design engineer with a proven track record of success. You have a strong understanding of engineering principles and best practices, and you are proficient in using CAD software and other relevant tools. You are a team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
