Employed Student Respiratory Therapist - Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments and document patient health status by:

    • Gathering patient information from medical records and observing clinical conditions;

    • Collaborating with the Respiratory Therapy team and other healthcare professionals, as well as engaging with patients and their families;

    • Maintaining accurate documentation of healthcare statuses;

    • Communicating any changes in patient conditions to relevant personnel as necessary.
  • Work alongside the Respiratory Therapy team and multidisciplinary professionals to develop and adjust patient care plans, focusing on:

    • Supporting patients in building health-promoting relationships;

    • Establishing both short-term and long-term health objectives;

    • Identifying and prioritizing appropriate care actions, including preventative and rehabilitative measures;

    • Assisting in planning for patient discharge.
  • Based on prior experience and assessed competencies, deliver Respiratory Therapy services by:

    • Assisting the supervising Respiratory Therapist with various procedures and interventions, which may include:
    - Monitoring and managing basic oxygen therapy,
    - Administering inhaled medications,
    - Basic airway management, including bronchial hygiene and tracheostomy care,
    - Maintaining and weaning both invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation,
    - Conducting ventilator monitoring and documentation,
    - Explaining care plans to patients and families,
    - Identifying and reporting emergencies,
    - Educating patients and families on self-care skills,
    - Managing inventory and maintenance of necessary supplies and equipment.

Qualifications

  • Completion of Level 1 clinical placement from an accredited Respiratory Therapy Program and ongoing enrollment in a recognized educational institution. Certification in Basic Life Support or equivalent is required.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to interact effectively with a diverse range of individuals, including colleagues, patients, families, and community representatives.
  • Physical capability to fulfill the responsibilities of the role.
  • Commitment to understanding and supporting the Truth & Reconciliation Commission's 94 Calls to Action and related initiatives.
  • Dedication to fostering meaningful reconciliation in accordance with the TRC and related legislation.
  • Knowledge of the social, economic, and historical contexts affecting Indigenous communities, along with familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism principles.
