Student Respiratory Therapist - Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Organization: BC Women's Hospital & Health Centre

Location: Vancouver, BC

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct assessments, document, and communicate patient health statuses by performing tasks such as:
    • Gathering patient information from medical records and observing conditions;
    • Collaborating with the Respiratory Therapy team and other healthcare professionals, as well as engaging with patients and their families;
    • Maintaining accurate health documentation;
    • Informing relevant personnel about patient status changes.
  • Work alongside the Respiratory Therapy team and other healthcare providers to assist in the formulation and adjustment of patient care plans, which includes:
    • Supporting patients in establishing health-promoting relationships;
    • Aiding in setting both short-term and long-term health objectives;
    • Helping to identify and prioritize care actions that encompass preventative, therapeutic, and rehabilitative care;
    • Contributing to discharge planning efforts.
  • Under the supervision of a qualified Respiratory Therapist, deliver Respiratory Therapy services that align with educational and training levels by:
    • Assisting with various procedures and therapies, including but not limited to:
    - Administering basic oxygen therapy,
    - Providing inhaled medications,
    - Managing basic airway needs,
    - Overseeing mechanical ventilation processes,
    - Documenting ventilator usage and monitoring,
    - Explaining care plans to patients and families,
    - Recognizing and reporting emergencies,
    - Educating patients and families on self-care skills,
    - Managing inventory of supplies and equipment.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of Level 1 clinical placement from an accredited Respiratory Therapy Program and ongoing enrollment in a recognized educational institution. Certification in Basic Life Support or equivalent is required.

  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to organize workload and establish priorities.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Capacity to interact effectively with diverse groups including colleagues, patients, families, and community representatives.
  • Physical capability to fulfill job responsibilities.
  • Commitment to understanding and implementing the Truth & Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action and related initiatives.
  • Dedication to fostering meaningful reconciliation in Canada.
  • Knowledge of the socio-economic and historical contexts affecting Indigenous communities, along with familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety principles.
